TYPE OF MASSAGE
DEFINITION
TECHNIQUE
DURATION
Effleurage.
Stroking.
Carried out prior to petrissage and friction. Accustoms animal to touch. Massage from periphery of affected areato the centre with uniform pressure.
10 minutes.
Petrissage
Kneading or compression.
Primarily used on muscles to enhance circulation. Muscle compressed from side to side.
3-7 minutes.
Friction.
Circular, rythmic motions.
To aid absorption of local effusions and loosen superficial scar tissue/adhesions. Pressure is applied to encourage collagen formation.
3-7 minutes.
