To help practices engage with pet owners on the topic, Animalcare has developed a collection of educational waiting room display materials, social posts and a national competition for the best practice-to-client dental communication.

Animalcare says that failing to attend to dental care at home results in 9 out of 10 dogs needing advanced dental treatment or procedures at the vets.

The company points to research which shows that osteoarthritis can affect up to 40% of dogs 1,2 and managing the disease requires a multi-faceted 1,3, life-long, approach.
Animalcare says its osteoarthritis diary gives practices a practical, client-friendly tool to engage pet owners in their dog’s care journey, promoting adherence to treatment plans and enhancing communication between vets and pet owners.
Pet owners are asked to record three everyday activities to monitor their dog's progress, for example, its ability to get into the car, go upstairs or get up after sleeping, on a scale of 1-4.

Apparently, anal gland impaction is the fifth most common reason for owners to take their dog to the vets1, and of course manual expression of impacted anal glands is unpleasant for everyone.

Each OraStripdx comprises a dry porous pad, pre-treated with a mixture containing a thiol detection reagent, attached to a plastic backing.
The strip is gently swiped along the maxillary gingival margins, whereupon it changes colour from off-white to various intensities of yellow, representing the concentration of thiols present.

Apparently, the WSAVA Global Dental Guidelines say that test strips have been shown to improve client compliance with dental recommendations.

Animalcare highlights research which shows that the number of pet owners who brush their pet’s teeth daily is very small: one study in Sweden suggested that only 8% of dog owners and 4% of cat owners met this target¹.

Animalcare says the wipes deliver tartar reduction with some mechanical action without the difficulties that some owners experience when using a toothbrush. The company says they can also help owners grow more comfortable with handling their pets’ mouths before they progress to full toothbrushing.

Danilon is used to relieve the pain caused by musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis (OA), bursitis, laminitis, and soft tissue inflammation.
Some oral NSAIDs have been shown to increase the risk of gastric irritation¹ - a particular concern when treating of chronic conditions.
However, Animalcare points to a study² in which horses given Danilon Gold showed a reduced number of ulcers and those that did appear were less severe.
The area of gastric mucosa affected was also five times less.

The survey was carried out to get an insight into how practices are currently helping clients ensure that their pets continue to enjoy life during their later years.
152 people took part: 60% nurses, 26% vets and 5% practice managers.
Less than 3 in 10 practices run senior pet clinics, and they mostly run them infrequently (biannually or less).
Three quarters of respondents also said that clients don't see the benefits of attending a senior pet clinic regularly.
It seems the current situation, then, is that few practices are providing a service that, er, apparently not many owners want.
Yet few in the profession would argue that a preventative approach is essential in order to give pets the best chance of leading healthier lives for longer.

However, the problem is that these things alone cannot solve the underlying problem of a shortage of time.
The only way to solve that one is probably to find more inventive, efficient ways to engage with the owners of older pets in a way that minimise the time pressures on veterinary practice staff.

He trained as a veterinary anaesthetist at Bristol and Cambridge Universities before moving into the pharmaceutical industry, gaining experience in drug development and technical support, and pre- and post-marketing, at a number of companies.
