Canixin L is an inactivated bacterial vaccine used to stimulate active immunity in dogs against two serogroups of Leptospira interrogans: Canicola and Icterohaemorrhagiae.
The new vaccine is licensed to reduce infection, clinical signs, kidney colonisation, renal lesions and shedding in the urine.
Virbac says Canixin L will play a crucial role in minimising the risk of the disease in both the individual and other animals that may come into contact.
It is licensed for use in dogs from 8 weeks of age, with a second injection administered 3 to 4 weeks later.
Virbac says that for the Canicola serogroup, Canixin L offers the highest level of protection, including prevention of mortality.

Vikaly is indicated for the nutritional and medical management of chronic kidney disease in adult and senior cats with proteinuria, from IRIS stage 2.
The new diet delivers the same therapeutic dosage as benazepril tablets (0.5–1 mg/kg bodyweight/day).
Nutrition-wise, Vikaly is low phosphorus (0.5% as fed), has reduced protein (30% as fed), contains omega-3 fatty acids (1.2%, including 0.6% EPA & DHA) and offers high metabolisable energy (416 kcal/100g).
Virbac highlights data showing that CKD remains the leading cause of mortality in cats over five years old and affects up to 40% of feline patients over the age of ten1,2.
The company says administering daily treatment is recognised as a major issue for CKD cat owners with 45% of owners not administering treatment daily as they should and 51% of owners citing administration difficulties as the reason why3.
This new product eliminates the need to administer medication separately, which could completely transform treatment compliance, removing the risk of missed doses and reducing stress for both cats and their owners.
Virbac says that due to the pharmacokinetic profile of benazepril, which is incorporated into the kibble, at an equivalent dose Vikaly displays greater ACE inhibition than benazepril tablets4.
The rate of food consumption also does not affect plasma Benazeprilat levels, ensuring consistent treatment efficacy regardless of the cat’s feeding behaviour5.
Virbac says that in practice, this means that even if the cat being treated consumes less than 50% of their daily ration, efficacy is maintained with ACE activity similar to that of benazepril tablets.
Benazepril has a wide therapeutic margin, tolerated to 20x the minimum effective dose (10mg/kg) for 52 weeks, with the first signs of toxicity being reduced erythrocytes counts & ovary/oviduct weights6.
Virbac says that with Vikaly, these levels cannot be reached because the active ingredient is contained in food, which would require a cat to consume more than 10 times their daily ration.
Vikaly is presented in a 1.5kg bag, which equates to a 30 day supply for a 4.5kg cat with normal bodyweight.
It can be fed alongside wet food, providing that the cat consumes at least 50% of their daily ration before being given the wet food.
The daily ration can also be administered in several smaller meals throughout the day, to accommodate the individual preferences of the cat and to promote consistent food intake.
Vikaly is a prescription diet. Or 'POD', I guess.

Trilotab is licensed for the treatment of pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism (PDH) caused by an adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenoma, which accounts for 85% of spontaneous cases of Cushing’s, and for the treatment of adreno-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (ADH) caused by a cortisol-secreting adrenocortical tumour (ACT), which accounts for the remaining 15% of spontaneous cases1.
The new tablet is divisible into halves and quarters to facilitate dose adjustment and make administration easier.
Divided tablets remain stable outside of the blister packaging until the next dose is due, thereby avoiding wastage.
Trilotab tablets are chewable and chicken-flavoured to help improve treatment compliance.
They contain hydrolysed chicken flavouring so they can be prescribed for pets allergic to chicken.
Trilotab is administered once daily with food with a starting dose of 2mg trilostane/kg bodyweight.
The new tabs are available in three presentations: 10mg, 30mg, and 60mg presentations, which Virbac says should help practices reduce their dispensary stockholding.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a clinically significant pathogen for canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), otherwise known as kennel cough, with 78.7% of dogs with acute respiratory signs testing positive for the bacteria1.
In the same study, 45.6% of clinically healthy dogs also tested positive for Bordetella bronchiseptica, illustrating that clinically healthy dogs can carry respiratory pathogens and could act as sources of infection for susceptible dogs1.
Administered via subcutaneous injection, Canigen Bb is an inactivated subunit vaccine which offers vets a new option when intra-nasal vaccination with a live aerosolised vaccine is not possible or preferred, for example when the dog is in contact with known immunocompromised individuals.
Licensed for use in dogs from 6 weeks of age, Canigen Bb extends protection against Bordetella bronchiseptica in dogs vaccinated with Canigen KC in the last 12 months for a further year with a single dose.
Canigen Bb is presented as a ready-to-use formula in a 10ml multi-dose bottle and can be stored at room temperature (2°C - 25°C) for up to 4 weeks once broached.
It can be administered concurrently (at the same time but separate injections) with Canigen DHP, Canigen DHPPi, Canigen Pi & Canigen Lepto 4.

Virbac highlights research which shows that 90% of all dogs over one year are affected by dental issues, including plaque, tartar, gingivitis and halitosis1, but small breed dogs are 5 times more likely to have dental issues than large breeds2.
The new formulation of Veterinary HPM Small & Toy range contains Ascophyllum Nodosum, which Virbac says has been scientifically proven activity on four aspects of oral and dental health: calculus index, volatile sulphur compound concentration, plaque index and gingival bleeding index3.
Virbac points to research which shows that after being absorbed in the small intestine and then secreted into the oral cavity via saliva, Ascophyllum Nodosum inhibits some pathways involved in plaque or calculus development4.
Nutrition-wise, Virbac says the new diet offers 33% less carbohydrate and 34% more protein, on average, compared to other brands sold in veterinary practices5.
90% of the protein included in the diets is also from animal protein.
The updated range also features 2 new kibble sizes (10.5mm & 7.5mm), for smaller mouths.
Cortotic contains hydrocortisone aceponate (HCA), a diester glucocorticosteroid to reduce inflammation.
In a clinical field study, published in Veterinary Dermatology, Cortotic was shown to be as effective in treating acute otitis as a fixed-combination product containing a corticosteroid, an antibiotic and an antifungal, with an equivalent improvement of clinical and cytological scores1.
A secondary reduction of bacterial and yeast overgrowth was demonstrated and a concomitant treatment with an antimicrobial was unnecessary.
The product was shown to provide rapid relief from clinical signs, pruritus and pain1.
Virbac says the lipophilic nature of the HCA diester provides enhanced penetration into the skin, a reservoir effect and low plasma availability for high local activity with reduced systemic secondary effects2.

Cortotic is presented in an ear spray device with atraumatic cannula, which delivers a fine mist spray for even application.

The new range allows for gradually increasing support for the CKD patient according to the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage, reducing phosphorous levels whilst avoiding early protein reduction and the associated lean mass loss correlated to a reduction in life expectancy.

Virbac says that eggshell membrane, which has been shown to have an effect on mobility in dogs and humans1, contains a number of naturally occurring elements involved in joint structure and function, including collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate.

Suprelorin 4.7mg is a sustained release implant containing deslorelin (a GnRH super agonist) which has been EMA and VMD approved for use in male cats from 3 months of age.
The implant provides temporary infertility and suppression of urine odour and of sexual behaviours such as libido, vocalisation, urine marking, and aggressiveness in intact male cats.
The implant typically lasts for at least 12 months1.
Virbac says that in most cats, testosterone levels drop within 2 weeks after implantation, followed by reduced testicular volume and reduced size of penile spines from weeks 4-8 after implantation.
Sexual behaviours begin to decrease within a week after treatment, starting with reduced vocalisation, followed by reduction in libido, urine odour, urine marking, and aggressiveness from 4 weeks after implantation.
Induction of infertility is achieved from approximately 6 weeks.

Suprelorin 4.7mg has also received a licensed claim in pre-pubertal female dogs for the induction of temporary infertility to delay the first oestrus and heat signs, and to prevent pregnancy at a young age in intact and healthy sexually immature female dogs.
The implant should be administered between 12 and 16 weeks of age.

The new Veterinary HPM Adult Neutered Wet with Salmon (a lifestage diet) and Urology Cat Wet (a clinical diet) have a high-protein low-carbohydrate formulation and a high share of animal protein.
Virbac points to studies which show that FLUTD is diagnosed in 8% of cats seen by vets for non-routine appointments1 and that there is a 51% risk of recurrence within one year of the initial diagnosis2.

This, says the company, highlights the need for increased awareness of MCTs, which, accounting for up to 21% of skin cancer cases2 in dogs, are the most common form of canine cutaneous neoplasia.
The incidence of MCTs is highest in dogs aged 6 to 10 years old3,4 with predisposition in some of the UK’s most popular breeds such as Labradors, French Bulldogs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Golden Retrievers.
Virbac says that until the launch of Stelfonta, surgical removal of tumours was the standard of care, but surgery can pose challenges for the veterinary surgeon, such as the accessibility of the tumour in order to obtain sufficient margins and anaesthetic risks, particularly in senior and brachycephalic pets.
