The company makes GIQuest, a patient-side lateral flow faecal calprotectin test, which it says can be used to guide next steps in dogs and cats with chronic GI conditions, including chronic enteropathy (CE; previously IBD), food responsive enteropathy (FRE) and GI side-effects associated with NSAID use.
Carus says that a validation study conducted at the University of Bristol has shown that its GIQuest can reliably distinguish dogs and cats with inflammatory enteropathy from healthy controls, with high sensitivity and specificity.
The company says faecal calprotectin is already well established in human medicine as a non-invasive marker of intestinal inflammation and is increasingly being adopted in veterinary practice to support diagnostic decision-making and treatment monitoring.
Lucy Williams MRCVS, from Carus Animal Health, said: “Individual case experiences often highlight nuances that don’t always come through in formal studies.
"Bringing these together can help illustrate how faecal calprotectin testing is being applied in different clinical scenarios, from refining diagnostic pathways to supporting monitoring and owner communication.

Case studies can be submitted by both veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses and may include, but are not limited to: dogs or cats with chronic or recurrent GI signs, suspected inflammatory enteropathies, monitoring response to dietary or treatment trials or identification of GI inflammation in patients receiving long term oral NSAIDs.

The new book is written and edited by leading international experts, including John Chitty, Deborah Monks, Anna Meredith, and Bob Doneley.

The course, which is designed to equip learners with essential leadership and management knowledge and skills, is aimed at those who are new to leadership, taking on additional responsibilities, or aspiring to lead within their organisation.
The course covers leadership theory, emotional intelligence, communication styles, motivation and workplace wellbeing.
The VMG says the iVLM offers a flexible and effective way to build leadership capability without the time or cost commitment of more advanced programmes.
The iVLM also provides a route into the VMG’s ILM accredited Qualified Veterinary Leader programmes: the VMG/ILM Level 5 Award (AVLM), the Certificate (CVLM) and the Diploma in Veterinary Leadership and Management (DVLM).
Alongside the new course, the VMG has re-launched an updated series of ten standalone CPD modules for those looking to build confidence or deepen their expertise in specific aspects of leadership.
Topics include understanding leadership styles, navigating team communication and supporting wellbeing.
Each module provides 25 hours of CPD and is aligned to Level 5.

Canixin L is an inactivated bacterial vaccine used to stimulate active immunity in dogs against two serogroups of Leptospira interrogans: Canicola and Icterohaemorrhagiae.
The new vaccine is licensed to reduce infection, clinical signs, kidney colonisation, renal lesions and shedding in the urine.
Virbac says Canixin L will play a crucial role in minimising the risk of the disease in both the individual and other animals that may come into contact.
It is licensed for use in dogs from 8 weeks of age, with a second injection administered 3 to 4 weeks later.
Virbac says that for the Canicola serogroup, Canixin L offers the highest level of protection, including prevention of mortality.

In the UK-wide online study, 1,772 dog owners assessed short clinical “vignette” scenarios describing 30 common canine conditions, based on VetCompass patient records.
Each owner reviewed three scenarios and judged both the likely condition and how urgently veterinary care was needed.
Their responses were compared with consensus opinions from experienced veterinary surgeons.
Owners were highly accurate at recognising conditions with clear visible signs, including epilepsy, kennel cough, flea infestation, anal gland disease and osteoarthritis.
However, they were less accurate with conditions that have more variable or subtle signs, such as mast cell tumours, glaucoma, diabetes and gastrointestinal foreign bodies.
Owners also underestimated the urgency of treatment in 28.4% of responses.
Conditions most often rated as less urgent than veterinary surgeons advised included ear infection (otitis externa), corneal ulcers and heatstroke.
Underestimating urgency is a major welfare concern because it can delay treatment, prolong suffering and, in severe cases, result in death.
Participants also reported which information sources they used, both for the vignette scenarios and habitually for their own dogs.
The most commonly used sources for their own dog’s health were personal knowledge or experience (73.7%), contacting their local veterinary practice (61.1%) and internet searches (49.2%).
Reputation (66.8%), factual correctness (65.6%) and availability (39.5%) most influenced their choice of information source.
Using online dog health groups—either habitually or to identify vignette conditions—reduced the accuracy of assessments.
Habitual use of these groups also increased the risk of underestimating urgency by 30%.
However, when used specifically to help answer the vignette scenarios, dog health groups reduced the risk of underestimating urgency by 50%.
General internet searching improved condition recognition but had no effect on urgency assessment.
Owners who habitually contacted their veterinary practice for advice were more likely to judge urgency in line with veterinary recommendations, highlighting the importance of strong working relationships between owners and practices.
The researchers suggest that telephone triage, telemedicine and veterinary-endorsed information resources may play an increasing role in supporting better decision-making.
Emerging AI tools may also help in future, although further research is needed to assess the reliability and risks of such systems.
Dr Rowena Packer, Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Behaviour and Welfare Science at RVC, said: “This study highlights a welfare gap between what dog owners observe and how they perceive the need for veterinary care.
"Problems without obvious external signs are most at risk of having urgent treatment underestimated.
"With better triage support, including telemedicine and carefully designed AI tools, there is an opportunity to improve awareness and reduce harmful delays.”

The event will introduce a new live discussion format, ShareSPACE Live, alongside its main lecture programme.
ShareSPACE Live will run on Thursday and will allow delegates to set the topics themselves, based on the leadership and management issues they are currently facing.
Sessions will be peer-led and focused on practical problem-solving, with agreed actions supported by the VMG after the event.
The keynote speaker will be polar adventurer and author Victoria Humphries, who will talk about how her “Anything is Possible” approach helped her lead the world’s first all-female expedition to the North Pole and build a commercial career after setting three Guinness World Records.
The lecture programme, under the theme “United in Leadership”, will include both new and returning speakers.
New speakers include Rapinder Newton, RCVS Mind Matters Initiative Lead, speaking on mental health in the workplace; Andrew Whitfield-Roberts RVN, who will talk about listening skills based on his work with the Samaritans; and veterinary social worker Rebecca Stevens, who will explain the support veterinary social workers can offer to teams and clients.
A current and a former student from the VMG/ILM Certificate in Veterinary Leadership and Management will also speak about topics they explored during their studies.
Friday will be Community Day, with opportunities to meet CVLM tutors, talk to VMG directors about membership and support, and take part in the group walk along the River Avon.

Vista IQ is designed for non-invasive screening of dermal and subcutaneous masses commonly seen in veterinary practice.
Building on the original HT Vista, Vista iQ retains the same Heat Diffusion Imaging (HDI) technology.

Amanda originally studied and worked in Australia where she undertook a residency in small animal medicine at Murdoch University, completing a Masters in respiratory medicine in dogs.
She moved to the UK in 2016 to work in referral medicine, joining Hamilton Specialist Referrals in 2024 as head of its medicine service.
The webinar will include a refresher on the bacterial, fungal, parasitic and protozoal causes of lower respiratory tract disease and its pathology, after which it will look at techniques and methods for diagnosis.

Taking over from Carl Gorman, Julian says his focus is to continue the work undertaken this year as part of a ‘programme of change’ for BSAVA, that will continue to promote the strong sense of community within the membership and the wider profession.
Speaking at the BSAVA AGM, Julian said: “I am very humbled as I stand here today as your 67th President. It is certainly the pinnacle of my veterinary career, and the greatest honour yet bestowed on me in life.
"We continue to live in exciting times at BSAVA, and as ever, I join a team of utterly amazing staff at Woodrow House.
“I really do believe that the BSAVA will continue to go from strength to strength and will continue to maintain its relevance and position as the indispensable voice of the small animal veterinary profession.”
Julian started volunteering for the BSAVA after his graduation within the Southeastern Regional committee, becoming Chair of the committee after a few years.
He then became part of the BSAVA Education Committee, BSAVA PetSavers Grants Awarding Committee, and was lately part of the Publications Committee.
He then joined the Presidential ladder two years ago as Junior Vice President.
Outside of his volunteering for the BSAVA, he was at Crossways Vets in West Sussex for 17 years, initially as a partner, then as an owner, and finally as a Clinical Director.
He has since stepped down from the practice to devote his time to being BSAVA President this year.

Spread over two floors, the 3,300 sq ft flagship practice is unusually large for a London clinic, and has a dedicated dental suite and laboratory, as well as six spacious and bright consulting rooms.
Notably absent from the practice are a reception desk and continuously ringing telephones.
Instead, customers receive a warm welcome in the members’ area, with separate spaces for cats and dogs.
Shades of lilac on the walls have been carefully chosen to keep animals calm, while a pick and mix wall filled with toys and treats helps pets to develop positive associations with vet visits.
Co-founders Russell Welsh MRCVS and online estate agent entrepreneur Daniel Attia say that a large portion of Creature Comforts’ customers have signed up as ‘All Access’ members, paying £20 per month to get unlimited access to expert care from vets and nurses.
This includes as many consultations as they need, annual vaccinations and discounted routine treatments e.g. 50% off microchipping.
The remainder have opted to pay as they go for treatment.
Creature Comforts’ chief veterinary officer, Dr Simon Hayes, says: “One of the biggest problems with UK veterinary care is that, due to the expense of consultations, pet owners are understandably reluctant to book in to see a vet until their animals are really sick.
"With a subscription model that includes unlimited consultations, we’ve removed the cost barriers to accessing expertise easily and quickly, so pets are seen more frequently, and conditions can be identified and treated earlier in the disease process, meaning a vastly better outcome for pets and hopefully greater financial savings over their lifetime, too.”

Creature Comforts’ third site, also in London, will open towards the end of this year, and the company is keen to hear from veterinary surgeons, nurses and others who may be interested in upcoming vacancies.

The College’s new look is has a contemporary feel, but features a shield device based on the original coat of arms granted to the RCVS in 1844, a nod to its history and heritage.
Updates to its overall visual identity include new logos, iconography, typography and colours, although the main blue and gold will remain.
These elements will be used together but in different ways to denote the College’s different initiatives, in order to make it easier for people to recognise the College’s different services.
The full rollout will take place over the coming months, with the design approach also applied to the RCVS Academy later this year and RCVS Mind Matters in 2026.
Branding for the Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) will remain unchanged at least until after the current PSS review has concluded.
RCVS CEO Lizzie Lockett, said: “Our previous look and feel had been in place for over 14 years and had served us well, but the modern, largely digital, communications landscape has evolved significantly in that time.
“We now also undertake a wider range of activities and initiatives and, against the current backdrop of the Competition and Markets Authority review and potential legislative reform, we may need to adapt to further changes ahead.
“It is therefore essential that our visual identity remains fit for purpose now and flexible for the way we work, both now and in the future.”

The three factsheet chapters cover understanding OA, creating a management plan and supporting pets and their owners.
Krka says each section is grounded in evidence-based approaches and was shaped by Professor Carmichael’s extensive knowledge of the pathogenesis of pain in patients with OA and experience in the diagnosis, contextualised treatment, and long-term care of patients with OA.
The resources encourage veterinary teams to adapt their approach to the needs of each case - supporting a flexible, patient-centred mindset in everyday consults.

The event will explore how referral and second-opinion care fit within the contextualised care model and how the profession can strengthen delivery of compassionate and sustainable specialist care.
The meeting is aimed at veterinary specialists, general practitioners, veterinary nurses, practice managers and others interested in referral practice, ethics, patient welfare and professional wellbeing.
Sessions include a presentation by Dr Rachel Dean FRCVS of VetPartners examining whether the concept of a veterinary “gold standard” can act as a barrier to contextualised care.
Other talks will explore how market structures influence veterinary care, the impact of changing ownership models on client relationships, and ethical dilemmas in practice.
Additional sessions will cover story-based approaches to contextualised care, collaborative contextualised care, clinical communication tools, and whether contextualised care differs within corporate practice settings.

The updated resources include sanitation protocols for clinical and non-clinical areas, plus staff training materials to standardise hygiene across teams.
They also includes guidance on positive surveillance for nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections, and an online self-audit tool designed to help practices review current procedures and identify gaps.
The update is intended to support infection prevention and responsible antimicrobial use, and to reduce the risk of resistant infections affecting animals and their owners.
The Foundation said it is expanding educational materials for veterinary professionals and pet owners, supported by a new board of trustees, veterinary student educators and clinical advisors.

The study was led by Ruby Chang, Associate Professor of Statistics at the RVC, and carried out by Dr Hanya Ahmed.
The team compiled a databank of images, including 100 equine fracture cases from two UK equine hospitals and published literature, alongside 70 feline cases from hospital databases and around 4,000 human fracture images from a public database.
Using these images, the researchers built a three-stage AI system that first identifies the scan type, then recognises the image angle, before detecting and precisely localising fractures.
The system used transfer learning, enabling it to be trained on the large human dataset before being adapted for equine cases.
Using this method, the system achieved a reported fracture localisation accuracy of between 71 and 84% without requiring an unrealistically large number of equine images.
The RVC said the findings demonstrate the potential for AI-assisted tools to strengthen fracture diagnosis across veterinary practice.
It said faster and more reliable detection could reduce uncertainty in clinical decision-making and enable earlier treatment for racehorses and companion animals.
Building on the work, the team has expanded its collaboration with the Hong Kong Jockey Club to investigate whether AI can identify early bone changes before fracture occurs.
The study has been shortlisted for the STEM for Britain 2026 award and was funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board.
The sessions are aimed at vets, vet nurses, SQPs and RAMAs involved in anthelmintic prescribing, and are designed to support implementation of new sustainable equine parasite control guidelines from the BEVA and Canter.
The webinars will be presented by Professor Jacqui Matthews, an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Parasitology, and Dr Wendy Talbot, Zoetis RCVS and European Specialist in Internal Medicine.

The week is intended to raise awareness and understanding of the role of Suitably Qualified Persons (SQPs), also known as Animal Medicines Advisors.
The organisers are encouraging retailers, pharmaceutical companies, animal owners, veterinary practice teams, government and SQPs to take part.
A campaign toolkit is being developed and will be launched ahead of the week.
The toolkit will include downloadable resources such as logos, posters, FAQs and activation ideas, and will be accessible to anyone wishing to participate.
The organisers said the campaign follows an industry survey indicating limited awareness of SQP expertise among animal owners and parts of the veterinary and animal medicines professions.
AMTRA CEO Stephen Dawson said: “SQPs are highly qualified professionals, yet many people who interact with them don’t fully understand their expertise—or the benefits they can bring.
“This campaign is here to change that.”
Stakeholders are being asked to mark their calendars, promote the week and plan activities in advance of the toolkit release.
The programme includes lectures by recognised experts in exotic animal and aquatic medicine.
Topics include “Ferret Emergencies: A Practical Approach to the Critical Patient”, “Hoppy Rabbits – The Role of the Veterinary Nurse in Creating a Rabbit-Friendly Practice”, “That’s a Lot of Axolotl!” – Care and Common Conditions of Axolotls”, and “No Vein, No Gain: Catheters, Intubation and Minimising Blood Loss in Exotic Surgery”.
The conference includes live Q&A sessions with speakers.
All sessions will be recorded, with access provided to attendees after the event.
A Zoom link will be sent to registered delegates in the week before the event.

The study first set out to address whether the higher proportional mortality previously reported for Pugs with PLE in referral care is also seen in dogs managed only in primary care by looking at 51 cases from VetCompass data.
In the study, 43% of Pugs died presumed due to PLE, with over half of these deaths occurring within three months of diagnosis.
Most deaths were recorded as euthanasia (64%), with the remainder recorded as unassisted deaths.
The underlying cause for the PLE diagnosis in most Pugs in the study was not identified.
Clinical signs at diagnosis commonly included diarrhoea, vomiting, inappetence, lethargy, weight loss and increased drinking.
At the time of death, additional signs reported included pale mucous membranes, seizures and anaemia, which the authors noted have not been reported in the literature previously.
Treatments prescribed were variable and included dietary therapy, prednisolone, clopidogrel, chlorambucil, cyclosporin and/or cobalamin supplementation.
Pugs treated with prednisolone or clopidogrel were significantly more likely to be alive after three months, but this effect did not persist at one or two years after diagnosis.
Dr Aarti Kathrani, lead author of the study, said: “The results of our study will help to increase awareness and highlight the outcome and various causes of death in Pugs with protein-losing enteropathy.
"We hope the results will also help drive much-needed further research into the mechanism, pathophysiology and consequence of this disease, which is needed to help discover effective therapeutic targets that could help improve the prognosis of this guarded condition.”
