Equipment

When assisting with euthanasia it is important to be familiar with the necessary equipment. Both the veterinary surgeon and the client will appreciate prompt preparation.

  • Consent form
  • Curved scissors or surgical clippers
  • Methylated spirit and a cotton wool pad
  • Suitably-sized syringe containing Lethobarb/Euthatal
  • Suitably-sized needles/intravenous catheters & bung (depending on vet's preference)
  • 2.5cm Elastoplast
  • Vetbed for the pet to sit or lie on

The following should also be close to hand, but kept out of sight of the client:

  • Muzzles/tranquillizing drugs in case the animal is aggressive
  • Labels for collars/leads/baskets
  • Label to identify the pet's body
  • Large plastic sack & cable tie (make sure that the sack is the correct colour for the type of disposal chosen by the client)
  • Permanent marker to label the sack
