All nursing staff are required to cover our other branch surgeries, depending on their rota. These are at Tetbury (Glos), Nailsworth (Glos), and Royal Wootton Bassett (Wiltshire). Occasional attendance at clients’ homes may also be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Communicate effectively with colleagues across all teams and clients- both verbally and written
  2. Assist the Veterinary Surgeon with diagnostic/surgical/medical procedures, consultations and during house visits
  3. Monitor and Record Anaesthesia- following practice protocol
  4. Run the Hospital Wards– i.e. medicating, intra-venous catheter placement, blood sampling, regular patient checks and general nursing duties under veterinarian instruction.
  5. Admit and Discharge patients – following practice protocol
  6. Preparation of Equipment, Patient and Environment – for surgical, diagnostic, anaesthetic and medical procedures
  7. Supervision and coaching of student veterinary nurses (subject to agreement) - you may be required to undertake clinical coach training to act as a primary clinical coach for student veterinary nurses within the practice team. This will entail;
    • completion of annual standardisation courses
    • participation in the practice VN training team meetings and discussions
    • conduction of weekly student/coach tutorials
    • assistance and co-ordination of practical training and mentorship to students
    • guidance and completion of your student's Central Skills Log
    • organisation and completion of all necessary training records pertaining to your student as required by our Training Centre (Abbeydale Vet Nurse Training Ltd)
    • a clear understanding and awareness of professional standards and the Code of Professional Conduct for Registered Veterinary Nurses in order to be a role model and mentor to our students.
  8. Running Nurse Clinics –including triage, first aid, weight clinics, etc.
  9. General Infection Control Duties – provide effective infection control for all clinical areas and equipment. To undertake equipment sterilisation (via steam/pressure autoclave and Ethylene Oxide) and laundry duties
  10. Maintaining Equipment and Clinical Areas- including servicing and repairs, stock checks and ordering of consumables.
  11. Perform Diagnostic Tests on Laboratory Samples- communicate and record results following practice policy. Prepare samples for sending to external laboratories.
  12. Adhere to Regulations – i.e. Schedule 3, CPD, Health and Safety, COSHH (refer to specific guidelines)
  13. Assist Other Departments Within the Veterinary Practice- e.g. reception duties and large animal kits
