Cardiothoracic Surgery Service RVN at the QMHA
We have an exciting opportunity for an RVN to be part of our unique and cutting-edge cardiothoracic surgery team. We are a friendly multidisciplinary referral hospital providing the highest standard of nursing care for patients undergoing heart surgery in the teaching hospital at The Queen Mother Hospital for Animals.
The cardiothoracic team works closely with owners, referring vets and cardiologists from around the world, as well as the hospital’s specialist teams including cardiology, anaesthesia and critical care throughout the patient’s journey. This is a unique opportunity providing a combination of hands-on nursing care, client communication and outpatient clinics.
As part of the cardiothoracic team duties will include:
-Collection of data from owner and vet email enquiries for weekly case discussion meetings
-Circulating and scrub nurse roles, including developing the technical expertise to be the surgical assistant for advanced cardiothoracic surgical procedures.
-Immediate post-operative care in the intensive care unit and assistance with ongoing care of patients in the wards
-Pre- and post-operative consultations within the heart surgery clinic
-Contribute and support the team with active research into cardiothoracic surgical techniques and methodology designed to advance the understanding of cardiac surgical therapies applicable to both humans and animals.
This role comprises of a variety of weekday shifts across the hospital – shifts may vary so a degree of flexibility will be required and inclusion on a shared weekend rota.
We are looking for an enthusiastic nurse with an interest in cardiology, surgical nursing and patient clinics. Although advantageous, referral hospital experience is not required as full specialist training and support will be provided.
