The awards will be presented at BVNA Congress 2026 and finalists from each category will be invited to attend the Dinner Dance and Awards Ceremony on Friday 9th October 2026.
The 2026 BVNA Awards are being presented in memory of individuals from the association's history.
Categories are The Jean Turner Award - RVN of the Year, The Des Thompson Award - Veterinary Team Member of the Year, The Jennifer Townson Award - SVN of the Year, and the VNJ Writer of the Year Award.
The RVN, SVN and veterinary team member categories are open to nominations from registered veterinary nurses, student veterinary nurses, other members of the veterinary team, and family and friends of the nominee.
The VNJ Writer of the Year Award is open to nominations from BVNA members only and covers articles published in the VNJ between September 2025 and July 2026.
BVNA President Sarah Holliday said: "We are delighted to launch this year's BVNA Award nominations, to recognise and celebrate the exceptional individuals that make up the veterinary nursing and wider veterinary professions.
"The BVNA Awards recognise the skilled care that individual RVNs and SVNs provide, and the unwavering compassion and empathy that they demonstrate every day.
"We know that veterinary nurses are not only powerful advocates for animal welfare, but also the wellbeing of the people around them.
"We're also thrilled to include an awards category for members of the wider veterinary team, who provide such valuable support to their veterinary nursing colleagues."

Seats are available for both registered veterinary nurses and student veterinary nurses, with applications open until Friday 15th May 2026.
BVNA Council approved the move towards an Application and Selection Process last year.
It said the change was made "with the aims of promoting inclusivity, and the ability to select Council members with varying backgrounds, skills and experience, to represent a wider range of RVNs and SVNs".
Council members serve a three-year period, with terms of office staggered.
Council meets six times per year, twice at the BVNA Head Office in Harlow, once during BVNA Congress in Telford, and otherwise online.
There are three committees within BVNA Council: Congress and Events, Membership, and Policy.
Council members also represent BVNA at veterinary events, including BVNA Congress.

The event will take the theme ‘Compassion and Empathy’, with a headline stream each morning focusing on how these values show up for patients, clients, colleagues and veterinary nurses themselves.
The programme will include sessions on topics including ‘no blame’ practice culture, fertility and parenthood, and balancing a career while managing chronic illness.
A full lecture programme will run alongside hands-on learning opportunities, plus a large exhibition featuring industry products and services.
Lecture streams include referral and first opinion nursing, anaesthesia and analgesia, emergency and critical care, advanced clinical nursing, nutrition, equine nursing, wildlife/exotics/zoo, student, and veterinary care assistants.
Practical workshops will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with topics including laboratory techniques, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, wound management and CPR.
Keynote speaker Linda Ryan, a veterinary nurse with VTS qualifications in Behaviour and Oncology, will open the event on Friday 9 October.

Sarah qualified as an RVN in 2008, and has since had a varied career within veterinary nursing – gaining experience in both clinical and non-clinical roles, with small animals and wildlife, and in primary care and referral settings.
She is currently the senior oncology nurse at a large referral hospital in Surrey.
In her inaugural speech as President at the BVNA AGM, Sarah introduced her presidential theme of compassion and empathy, explaining how she wants to ensure the voice of veterinary nurses is “recognised, respected and represented” not just within veterinary clinics, but across the wider profession and society.
She said: "Compassion and empathy will mean something different to each of us.
"Personally, this theme really aligns with my role as an oncology RVN, whether that is supporting an owner through end-of-life care, hand feeding an inpatient, or making a colleague a cup of tea during a difficult shift.
“I believe this theme showcases the holistic nature of RVNs.
"We embed compassion in every part of our roles and it is at the heart of all we do.
"My vision is that this theme enables us to highlight the impact veterinary nurses have on our patients, their families and those within the profession.
"I am sure we all have an example of when a veterinary nurse’s compassion has made a real difference to someone’s life.
“I hope we can use this opportunity to recognise those that have demonstrated exceptional empathy and compassion within their role, and act as a reminder to show compassion to ourselves whilst working within the veterinary profession.”
The keynote speaker on the Saturday this year is Helen Ballantyne, a renowned dual-qualified medical and veterinary nurse, currently working as a Transplant Coordinator for the NHS.
Bringing her rare perspective from both veterinary and human-centred nursing, Helen will highlight the progress made by the veterinary nursing profession, and its future potential.
There's a diverse programme of CPD lectures, debates on various hot topics including the CMA investigation and practical workshops covering things like: practical application of wound dressings, suturing skills, interactive CPR and preventing wound infections and AMR.
On top of all that, there's the usual commercial exhibition, bingo evening on the Friday, and a singing sixties-themed dinner dance on the Saturday.

Jessica Dawe, Deputy Head Nurse of Nine Mile Veterinary Hospital, won the individual award.
Her nomination read: "Every day, she comes in with a smile and puts in 100%, no matter the challenges faced the day before.
"Jess does not give herself the credit she deserves, as she is an amazing veterinary nurse, colleague, manager and friend to everyone.
"Her resilience, modesty, knowledge and clinical skills are admirable and we would be lost without her, and therefore, Jess is very much the diamond in our practice.”
The team award was won by the nursing team at ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists.
The runners up were Claire Mortimore from Caerphilly Veterinary Clinic, and the team at York Vets for Pets
BVNA President Lyndsay Hughes said: “The entries we have received have inspired and energised us, and we hope it’s been a real boost to all those who have been nominated too.
"It was incredibly difficult to judge the entries and shortlist our deserving winners and runners up, and we’d like to thank everyone to took the time to nominate their VN “diamonds”.

The toolkit also offers the opportunity for clinical supervisors to take part in bi-annual meetings led by BVNA, the first taking place in-person during BVNA Congress 2024.
Steph Worsley, BVNA Council Member and Clinical Coach Toolkit project lead, said: “BVNA is delighted to have led the work on this toolkit, which we feel is an important resource for any RVN or vet who is carrying out the clinical coach role for an SVN.

The annual three-day event takes place between Friday 11th – Sunday 13thOctober 2024 at the Telford International Centre.

Kirsty won the BVNA Impact Award for going above and beyond to support and teach others in practice.
Aneesa won the VNJ Writer of the Year Award for articles which have encouraged discussions, or positive change, or improved clinical standards in practice.
Sarah won the Inspiring Environmental Change Award for being a green champion for the veterinary profession, inside and out of practice.
Flick won the #Supportmesupportyou Award for promoting mental health support & equality within the profession.

The campaign comes after the Association carried out a survey of 1000 of its members which found that 79% had been affected or diagnosed with a chronic illness or condition, such as migraine, anxiety and depression, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, or the menopause.

At the end of the campaign, the BVNA will invite veterinary practices to make use of a new digital tool kit, designed to support practices to develop protocols that help veterinary nurses suffering with a chronic illness or condition.
Alex Taylor BVNA Junior Vice President said: "This campaign means a great deal to myself and the rest of the Council Members who are part of the BVNA chronic illness campaign task and finish group. Every one of us has had to deal with our own challenges as working as a veterinary nurse with a chronic illness or condition - we know how it feels and we want to help and make a real difference to people’s lives.
"As well as offering support to affected nurses, we also wanted to reach out to their colleagues, line managers and employers. We felt that having empathetic, supportive and well-informed colleagues is a key part of helping those affected by chronic illness to thrive in the workplace.
"Everyone deserves to be given the chance to reach their full potential in their job role and having a chronic illness should not be a barrier to achieving this. This campaign will not only raise awareness, but provide essential resources to those who need it, which after seeing the results of our recent survey, is very much needed."

The awards were announced during a virtual evening event last Saturday called 'This Is Us 2020', which started with a presentation by Dr Jane Goodall DBE, followed by the award presentation by the BVNA’s Junior Vice President, Jo Oakden.
Christine Robinson won the St Francis Award, which is given to the nurse who has gone above and beyond for their team, for their patients and for the veterinary nursing profession over the past 12 months.
Christine said: "I am delighted to have won this award, and very surprised! In my very long and diverse career, I have never won an award at all. It’s been lovely to have been acknowledged by others and seen as a role model, and for my nursing to be recognised."
Bethany Scott won the Help in the Community Award, which is for a nurse who has gone above and beyond to help animal owners and/or their clinical teams during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bethany said: “I am absolutely shocked and I really wasn’t expecting this! Thank you to those who nominated me and congratulations to everyone else.”
Last but by no means least, Courtney Scales won the VNJ Writer of the Year Award for writing articles which have encouraged positive change, discussions or improved clinical standards in practice.
Courtney said: "This has made my entire year! I am just super super proud, having presented the topic at Congress last year and then going on to write the articles. I really think I have changed quite a few nurses’ perceptions, protocols and patience, and it’s just so exciting."
Jo Oakden said: “It was fantastic to see all the worthy nominees and finalists for our new BVNA awards and Hills and Blue Cross awards.
"The high standards, dedication and resilience of our profession was demonstrated with all of our nominees and winners of the awards, showing they can adapt and overcome to be champions in our profession to help educate and inspire those within and outside of our profession.
"It was a huge honour to be able to present these awards and still keep the celebratory feel in these unusual times. A huge congratulations to all our winners.”

The association says it had been contacted by a number of its members, exhibitors and speakers to express concerns about their health and safety if they attended this year’s event. Others said their employers were not allowing them to travel to external events until after Christmas.
The final decision to call off the event was due to the continued uncertainty facing large-scale events.
However, the BVNA says it now plans a virtual event to replace Congress, which will include first-class keynote speakers, interactive workshops, live interviews, themed virtual networking, and evening social quizzes.
The event will be free for BVNA members to take part but open to all.
BVNA President Jo Hinde said: "This is the first time that the BVNA have not been able to hold our congress and it was an exceptionally sad decision to have to make, however it is vital that we play our part in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic and put public safety first.
"However, we cannot let the occasion pass without marking it hence offering a weekend that celebrates all things vet nurse!
"Our congress has always been about more than just high quality CPD: it’s where the BVNA family get together with friends – old and new.
"We understand just how isolated and exhausted the veterinary community are feeling right now, and how this has negatively affected individual’s mental health. As such, we want to provide an online space to facilitate those catch ups, hear from inspiring speakers and most of all…have fun!
"I am very excited about the new event and hope vet nurses and the wider veterinary community can join us for what promises to be a fabulous time."
First and foremost the Association says the profession should only provide urgent and emergency care, that is treatment which cannot wait three weeks.
The Association also highlights in the importance of veterinary nurses leading by example when it comes to social distancing.
Other advice includes:
Splitting teams to the absolute minimum you need in your practice. Try and keep the same teams together to minimise cross over
Triage and take history over the phone. Consider using video calls to consult remotely.
Encourage clients to email prescription requests, give yourselves more time to achieve this – your standard 24-hour turnaround can be adapted!
If you are posting prescriptions, aim to reduce this to one postal drop off each week.
Encourage clients to wait in the car until you are ready for them to come in for their appointment and consider only bringing the pet into the clinic.
Encourage payments over the phone and avoid cash transactions where possible.
Work from home as much as possible.
Reduce the footfall of clients to your practice, protect your staff. Be responsible for encouraging the public to not come into the vets unless it is an emergency.
Practice good infection control procedures. We are nurses, we are better than most at this!
BVNA President, Jo Hinde said: "I implore all veterinary staff to follow current advice and make changes so you can do your bit to limit the spread of Covid-19. These government-imposed restrictions are non-negotiable for the next three weeks. Let’s all work together to help save lives and be a part of the solution and not the problem."
The BVNA offers further support for veterinary nurses in the form of the members advisory service, and for nurses facing financial hardship, the Daphne Shipman Benevolent fund.
Kim, who is a veterinary nurse at Avonvale Veterinary Centres’ Heathcote practice, felt there was a lack of CPD events for nurses in her area, and made it her mission to do something about it.
She has already organised three CPD events for the remainder of 2019, with the first one taking place last month.
Kim said: "As a dedicated RVN who loves nothing more than a good webinar to watch or a CPD event to expand my knowledge, I thought it would be great if I could put that passion into providing CPD for fellow vet nurses.
"I contacted the BVNA asking if they needed a representative and it didn’t take long for them to get back to me saying they would like me to join the team.
"My main job is to provide high-quality CPD at affordable prices for veterinary nurses and the aim is to provide at least three evening CPD events a year or one full day course.
"Other aspects of the job role include taking part in Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month. You can do this by organising an event, coming up with stories for social media, or asking the local paper or radio station to interview you.
"We also go to the BVNA Annual Congress to raise awareness of the BVNA and the vital role nurses play."
Kim plans to focus on nurse consultations this year and the first CPD event will look at pet obesity which, she said, is a major concern in the UK, so feels it is important that veterinary staff have the most up-to-date information to give to the public.
She added: "I very much look forward to seeing as many veterinary nurses at my CPD events as possible and I hope my passion comes across in what I can provide for them.
"If anyone wishes to request a particular subject all they need to do is ask and we will endeavour to find a speaker and get something organised."
The BVNA has officially launched its new website along with refreshed branding.
The Association says the new site was designed to showcase the association’s key activities of CPD, member representation and support. User navigation has been improved, along with an increased focus on sharing the association’s news on campaigning and lobbying activities.
A President’s Blog will feature updates from association president Fiona Andrew, while non-members can sign up to receive the BVNA newsletter which will highlight both regional and national activities. In response to feedback from a consultation last year, the association has expanded its advice pages. Veterinary nurses can now find information on mental health support, the Members Advisory Service, peer to peer support and financial help that is available through the Daphne Shipman Benevolent Fund.
Fiona said: “2015 is a pretty momentous year for the veterinary nursing profession and I feel very honoured to be representing our members at this key time. We have campaigned for a long time on professional status for veterinary nurses and it is so gratifying to see this come to fruition with the new Royal Charter being introduced in our 50th Year. There’s still much to be done though, and we’re looking forward to sharing our aims and achievements for 2015 with members and the rest of the profession.”

The British Veterinary Nursing Association has announced that National Veterinary Nurse Week will be a summer event this year, scheduled from 19th - 25th July 2009.
The change of date will allow vet nurses to take part in more outdoor events, as they raise awareness of the important job they do in caring for the nation's pets.
As ever, vet nurses are being encouraged to celebrate their profession, raise money for the BVNA President's nominated charity - which this year is the Search and Rescue Dog Association (Wales) or SARDA Wales as they are known - and to highlight the role of the veterinary nurse, helping make the general public more aware of the contribution a good VN can make.
The BVNA has organised some lynch-pin events this year and are asking any vet nurses who want to take part to contact them as soon as possible to register their interest. The week begins with pet health check days held on Saturday 19th July at Southsea Common's Castle Field in Portsmouth and Roundhay Park in Leeds, sponsored by Hill's Pet Nutrition. Rounding off the week on Friday 24th July till Sunday 26th July, the BVNA will be attendance at the CLA Game Fair, the world's biggest and greatest country sport and countryside show, which this year will be held at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire. This provides an opportunity to speak to thousands of pet owners about veterinary nursing and petcare, so the BVNA is keen to have a team of enthusiastic nurses on hand to help spread the word.
Bonny Millar CVT(USA), RVN, REVN, is President of the BVNA, "Last year vet nurses came up with some fantastically innovative ideas to promote National VN Week, from a 'barely there' calendar to a fairy tale week complete with characters in costume and background sets. We estimate that VN Week raised over £7000 for the Animal Cancer Trust and other animal charities. This year we would really like to raise even more. I am also asking every member of the practice team - vets, practice managers and receptionists to support their nurses in their efforts and enter into the spirit of National VN Week."
Bonny also points out that this is an ideal opportunity for practices to use their nurses to full effect, "During VN week, practices have a chance to demonstrate the skills of their nurses. Fun events provide an ideal way to reduce barriers between clients and the practice team and by getting nurses meeting the public away from the clinic, there is real scope to educate and inform pet owners about the products and services on offer and to gently encourage those with reservations to bring their pets forward for health checks and treatments. Vets and practice managers know what a great contribution a good vet nurse can make to the practice and the local community, so we would love to see everyone pulling together to make a big effort as this can only help boost moral amongst clients and staff during these difficult financial times."

The British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) has announced the initial results of an on-line BVNA awareness and opinion survey of the members of this website, conducted in February this year.
The survey attracted nearly 1000 responses, mainly from VNs working in small animal practices, 49% of whom were already BVNA members.
Results from the survey included:
BVNA President, Clare Fraser, said: 'It's easy for us who are actively involved in the BVNA to know about the benefits of membership, but we felt we needed to canvas the views of VNs in the UK and overseas to gain a broader picture on the perception of our organisation.'
'For example, although annual, quarterly or monthly direct debit payments for annual membership fees have been available for the past eleven years, 30 per cent were not aware of this. The monthly direct debit cost for a full member is only £3.91', explained Claire.
'Nearly a third of respondents mentioned CPD has a benefit of BVNA membership, and we expect this number to increase, as voluntary regulation now requires every registered VN to undertake a minimum of 45 hours of CPD over a three-year period.
'Interestingly, 20 per cent of respondents thought they are not eligible to join the BVNA, for reasons such as they currently reside outside the UK, or they are not registered VNs. In fact, membership is open to anyone in the UK or overseas, and there are different levels of membership, including British trained VNs, VN students, and associate members who work in jobs allied to the veterinary profession but are not actually VNs.
'We greatly value the feedback from members and non-members alike, and thank everyone who has taken part', added Claire, 'but we still welcome more views and suggestions to ensure that we continue to accurately represent VNs in the future'.
Claire Fraser, RVN, MBVNA, took over as President of the British Veterinary Nursing Association for the coming year at the BVNA AGM held on 21 October 2007 at the Annual BVNA Congress. Claire qualified as a VN in 1990 and worked in general veterinary practice for six years, when she took up the position of Lecturer and Course Tutor at the Berkshire College of Agriculture, where she gained D32/33 units and the FAETC. She then moved in 2000 to Guernsey where she worked as a practice tutor and set up and ran the PreVN (now ANA)/SVN training side. During this time, Claire became BVNA Regional Co-ordinator (RCO) for the Channel Islands, until 2003, when she was elected onto the BVNA Council. Claire moved back to the UK in 2004 and now works as an Internal Verifier for MYF Training in Aldershot. "I am extremely lucky to have a job I enjoy and an employer that allows me to be flexible, so I can fit in my new role as BVNA President," said Claire. "I have also achieved the V1 award, which has kept me up-to0-date with the quality assurance process and ensures that I continue to provide my assessors and students with the right support and guidance." The out-going President, Julia Gordon, who held this post for the past two years, moves to the advisory role of Senior Vice President.
The final count isn't in yet, but it looks like it's been another record year for attendance at BVNA Congress. Organisers (pictured on the BVNA stand, left to right: Caroline, Angie, Hon. Secretary Lisa Cooper, Alison, Lisa) report that 2044 delegates had pre-registered. More showed up on the day.
