The organisers of Rabbit Awareness Week (15th-21st September) are calling on veterinary practices to show their support and sign up to its free health check scheme, to highlight the importance of preventative healthcare for rabbits.
This year's RAW campaign is focusing on vaccinations, to protect one of Britain's most popular small pets from two painful and potentially fatal diseases, myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD).
Participating practices will receive free support packs to help them advertise and run their own health check events, as well as care advice materials to give out to clients who bring their rabbits in.
Rabbit Awareness Week 2012 is backed by Burgess Excel and various partners, including MSD Animal Health, RSPCA, PSDA, Blue Cross, Wood Green The Animals Charity and RWAF (Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund).

Pfizer Animal Health's Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) vaccine (Duvaxyn EHV 1,4) has been rebranded Equip EHV 1,4).
Pfizer says that EHV is carried by most horses in the UK1 and can cause respiratory disease, abortion and more rarely neurological disease. However, it is the more common sub-clinical infections that pose the most apparent issue for the competition client, with the associated loss of performance and the potential effect on the health of the whole yard.
Once infected with EHV, a horse can harbour the virus throughout its life and potentially shed the disease to other animals without showing any outward signs. According to the company, vaccinating helps to minimise the severity of the disease itself and importantly, can also help to reduce the amount of infective virus that is shed to other in-contact horses.
Equip EHV 1,4 is given as a primary course of two vaccinations, 4-6 weeks apart followed by a single dose every six months. It can also be used as an aid in the control of EHV-1 abortion - pregnant mares should be vaccinated with a single dose during each of the 5th, 7th and 9th months of pregnancy.

Ceva Animal Health has produced a leaflet to help horse owners understand the cause, diagnosis and management of equine back pain.

Organisers of the Vet Charity Challenge are calling for more people to take part in the event, to join the 100 that are already set to walk, run, cycle, kayak and orienteer around the grounds of the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester on On 15th September.
Gavin Mitchell from BCF Technology said: "We have entered two teams and already have a £100 bet on which of our teams will gain the most points on the day. This rivalry has certainly had a positive influence on the amount of training we are all doing to prepare for the challenge. The teams are out cycling after work and off for runs during lunchtimes."

The Kennel Club is hosting its second Puppy Awareness Week to help improve the health and lives of dogs around the UK, and is seeking assistance from the veterinary profession.
Puppy Awareness Week is taking place from 8th - 14th September and aims to help people find a healthy, happy puppy that is right for their lifestyle, whilst raising awareness about the plight of puppies and breeding bitches born into cruel puppy farms.
To help, veterinary surgeons and nurses are being asked to join in the week, putting up posters and literature in client waiting areas, and selling Puppy Awareness Week badges for £2, which will go to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust.
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary said: "It is vitally important that we spread the word about buying puppies responsibly. At veterinary surgeries there is a captive audience of animal lovers and we can't think of anyone better to communicate with. Virbac Animal Health is calling on practices to prepare for Canine Prostate Awareness Month (CPAM), being held by the company in November to highlight the prevalence of the disease and to encourage owners and practices to test for it.
Last year, 400 practices sign up to support the event, and the company says that feedback from many taking part confirmed a significant lack of understanding among clients as to the risk of prostate disease in dogs.
Canine Prostate Awareness Month is timed to coincide with 'Movember', when thousands of men grow moustaches to raise funds for male prostate and testicular cancer. Petplan has launched a new service to pay vet claims direct to practice bank accounts via BACS.
Petplan says it pays out nearly £3 million in claims each week, which is the equivalent of paying £35,000 per year to each veterinary practice in the UK. Paying practices by BACS means that the money is received faster and there is no administration required by the practice, freeing up more time for clinical work.
As part of this new service, practices also receive a detailed statement by email providing a breakdown of the client claims the payment relates to.

The Badger Trust's legal challenge to Defra's plans for targeted badger cull pilots has failed in the High Court on all three grounds.
Whilst the RSPCA has expressed its disappointment, the British Veterinary Association and British Cattle Veterinary Association have welcomed the judgement.
BVA President Carl Padgett said: "We are pleased that the High Court has ruled Defra's policy lawful and that the pilot badger culls can now go ahead.
"The BVA and BCVA believe that the government's approach has been robust and justifiable as it is based on our current scientific knowledge.
"Bovine TB is a devastating disease and we must tackle the disease in wildlife alongside cattle controls if we are to get on top of it."
David Bowles, the RSPCA's Director of Communications, said: "We are bitterly disappointed that the UK Government in England is ploughing on with plans to kill badgers but the fight is not over yet.
"We believe culling is not a long-term, sustainable solution and will be of little help in reducing the disease - perhaps even making things worse in some areas. It will wipe out huge numbers of this much-loved species, virtually eliminating badgers from these areas, including many animals which are healthy.
"It is not as if there aren't alternatives to a cull. Vaccination could be a more effective and sustainable way of dealing with the disease, and one which does not involve killing most of the badger population in very large areas of the countryside."
Virbac Animal Health has launched Speed Leish K, a diagnostic test for canine leishmaniosis.
Speed Leish K detects antibodies directed against the kinesins of leishmania using a Kinesin Capture Complex (KCC), a complex of recombinant proteins with strong immunogenic power at all stages of infection. Virbac says that in trials the test has demonstrated 98.5% overall accuracy.*
Virbac Product Manager Simon Boulton MRCVS said: "Leishmaniosis presents a growing threat to UK dogs, particularly those which travel with their owners on holiday to regions where the disease is endemic.
"Speed Leish K should be used as part of the primary CaniLeish vaccination protocol in animals previously at risk of exposure to ensure only health animals are vaccinated. The test can also be used to screen for the disease in animals suspected to be infected."
Speed Leish K is presented in kits of two or six tests and can be stored for 24 months at room temperature.
The anti-emetic, Cerenia (maropitant citrate), has gained licenses for use in puppies from as young as eight weeks of age and in cats from 16 weeks of age in the prevention and treatment of vomiting and reduction of nausea.
Cerenia is an NK-1 receptor antagonist which Pfizer says is effective against both peripheral and central emetic stimuli by acting on the final common pathway for emesis. It is, according to the company, the only NK-1 receptor antagonist licensed for dogs and cats.
Pfizer adds that in addition to the use for general emesis in puppies, Cerenia can also be used for chemotherapy-induced nausea in dogs. Studies in human oncology show that some patients receiving chemotherapy consider nausea to be more distressing than vomiting1. and the use of NK-1 receptor antagonists has shown clear benefits in the prevention of nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy-treated humans2. Cerenia tablets are also for the treatment for motion sickness in dogs aged 16 weeks or older, delivering claimed efficacy up to 93% without sedating the dog.
Kate Grocott, Product Manager for Cerenia, said: "Already successfully used in the treatment and prevention of vomiting and chemotherapy nausea in dogs, the new licence is a positive step forward for the prevention and early treatment of vomiting for puppies as young as eight weeks of age and cats from 16 weeks old. Being able to deploy Cerenia in these cases, will improve quality of life, and increases the likelihood of the animal voluntarily taking food and water thereby assisting in the recovery where there is underlying disease."
The new licence for treatment of cats with Cerenia is associated with the injectable form, while puppies may be treated with either an injection or tablets.

The BVA has welcomed an update report on dog breeding issues by the Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare (APGAW).
Working with a small group of stakeholders including the British Veterinary Association, Dogs Trust, Kennel Club and RSPCA, this report looks at what has been done since the first APGAW report in late 2009 and the airing of Pedigree Dogs Exposed (2008) and Pedigree Dogs Exposed: Three Years On (2012).
BVA Past President Harvey Locke said: "The BVA fully endorses the recommendations and practical solutions offered by this timely report."

The BVA Animal Welfare Foundation and RSPCA have recently launched a puppy contract and puppy information pack (PIP) which arms buyers with the knowledge to give themselves the best chance of getting a fit, healthy and happy, well socialised pet to join their household. The contract and PIP have also been designed to help good breeders demonstrate the care and attention they have devoted to their puppies' breeding and upbringing.
"Much work has already been undertaken to improve dog breeding but there is much more to be done and the momentum must not be lost. I am most grateful to Neil Parish MP, chairman of APGAW, for his commitment to producing this report. It is an excellent means of keeping the issue high on the agenda by encouraging wider dialogue and debate within Parliament and in the EU."
The BSAVA reports that its inaugural Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy VN Merit Award is already fully subscribed, with places on other programmes proving hugely popular.
The association says it created the VN Merit Awards having identified a demand amongst nurses for focussed and cost-effective CPD which could fit into busy lives. Academic Director Dr Frances Barr said: "Veterinary nurses have an increasing desire to stretch their skills and expand their contribution to the clinical team, and the new awards will provide that opportunity. They deserve the support of the whole profession.
"VNs taking part in these programmes can expect to strengthen their theoretical knowledge and to learn important practical skills in an area of particular interest to them. At the end they will be taking greater confidence and new skills back into the practice which they can share with the wider practice team."
Despite being a brand new course, BSAVA says that there there is clearly faith that it can continue to deliver relevant, challenging CPD for nurses. The first two Merit Awards will run in autumn 2012. All the places on Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy have been booked, but interested individuals can join a waiting list for the next course. Anaesthesia and analgesia has also proved popular, with just a few places left, at the time of writing. Further merit awards in wildlife nursing and in surgical nursing are planned for 2013.

Royal Canin has launched its second 'Weigh-in Club' competition to help cats and dogs lose weight safely.
Royal Canin says the competition is designed to reward veterinary nurses who work with their clients to tackle pet obesity effectively. Last year, it had over 170 registrations.
The competition is open to vet nurses whose clients' pets have undergone a supervised weight loss programme (being fed exclusively on Royal Canin diets) and have met their target weights. The overall winning nurse will receive £500 worth of high street shopping vouchers as well as £1,000 of equipment vouchers for their practice. Participating practices will be sent competition materials for display, to encourage their weight-loss clients to take part in the competition. Nurses will also have the chance to track their entrants' progress on Royal Canin's new interactive website, where you can upload 'before and after' photos and compare weight loss with other competitors.
As an added incentive to pet owners, the overall winning client will receive free Royal Canin pet food for a year and £500 worth of high street shopping vouchers. The top 11 runners up will appear, alongside the winner, in an exclusive Royal Canin calendar and every owner that enters will receive a 'Company of Animals' Activity Pyramid to help them keep their pets in great shape.

Virbac Animal Health has launched an extra small version of its VeggieDent dental chews for dogs weighing less than 5kg.
Research commissioned by the company shows that 9% of all dogs in the UK weigh less than 5kg1 and that periodontal disease is over-represented in this group2.
According to the Kennel Club, celebrity culture is boosting the popularity of small breeds. Apparently there was a 25% increase in Kennel Club registrations of Chihuahuas in 2011, following publicity about Paris Hilton and her Chihuahua. Virbac says numbers of other small miniature breeds such as pugs are also growing rapidly.

Virbac Animal Health has announced that its medical castration implant Suprelorin 9.4mg has received a marketing authorisation for use in ferrets.
The neutering of male ferrets (hobs) is recommended to suppress fertility, decrease odour and reduce territorial aggressive behaviour and urinary marking¹. According to Virbac, Suprelorin offers temporary sterilisation but without the need for surgery, and its use prevents the high Luteinizing hormone (LH)/Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels which occur following surgery and which can play a role in the development of hyperadrenocorticism².
Suprelorin is a slow-release implant containing the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist deslorelin. Once injected under the skin of healthy, sexually mature and entire ferrets, the continuous low release of deslorelin from the implant causes an interruption of the HPA circuit, leading to a reduction in LH/ FSH levels and therefore testosterone production. This results in a reduction of libido, spermatogenesis and testicle size.
The implant lasts for up to four years, at which stage the ferret can be re-implanted to maintain the effect.

ProteqFlu, the live attenuated canarypox equine influenza (EI) vaccine, has had its shelf life extended from 27 to 36 months.
Merial says the increased shelf life is the result of ongoing investment in vaccine research & development, and that the new data underpins the stability of modified live vaccine technology.
Merial highlights that ProteqFlu is the only equine flu vaccine in Europe to include the updated American clade 1 Ohio/03 strain in accordance with the OIE recommendations (2004).
