Job Description

Veterinary Nurse - Fixed Term Contract (to cover maternity leave of up to 12 months)
National Cat Centre, Chelwood Gate, Sussex
Salary £25,387.79 per annum (starting salary is subject to experience), for 35 hours per week

Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity. We now help around 190,000 cats and kittens through our network of over 250 volunteer-run branches and 34 adoption centres and homing centres. 
We are seeking an experienced Veterinary Nurse to provide veterinary nursing duties at the NCC Veterinary Clinic and to ensure consistent high levels of care to the cats under its care.
Key Responsibilities:
- To assist the Veterinary Officer with general nursing duties
- To prepare patients and assist the Veterinary Officer with examinations, surgery and record-keeping
- To provide post-operative care of patients
- To support the appropriate handling of veterinary medicinal product stock
- To maintain clinic hygiene
- To communicate with adoption centre staff to ensure the smooth running of the clinic and rounds
- To prepare and use the surgical, laboratory and imaging equipment as necessary
- To carry out laboratory work, package samples, complete the paper work and maintain records
- To follow the appropriate waste management procedures in the clinic
- To help produce Standard Operating Procedures for the Vet Clinic and follow the Standard Operating Procedures for the Vet Clinic, complying with the RCVS practice standards manual
- Assisting the Veterinary Department with communication and administration if required as directed by the NCC Veterinary Officer
In common with all posts, ensure compliance with Cats Protection’s policies and procedures, statutory obligations and best practice, and to undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Chief Executive. This job description may be subject to review in the light of the developing organisation and in consultation with the post holder.
Person Specification:
- You will be a qualified veterinary nurse and have experience of working in small animal practice, ideally in a cat friendly practice
- You will be self-motivated with the ability to work on your own initiative
- You will have good organisational, interpersonal and communication skills
- You will be empathetic to the aims and objectives of Cats Protection and committed to animal welfare
** Please note the slight differences between the role as described above and the attached Job Description and Person Specification, in terms of whom the Nurse will be assisting - this is due to the temporary nature of this role, as it is covering a period of Maternity Leave.
