Role Overview:

To be responsible for the efficient   and smooth running of the dispensary within the Centre for Small Animal Studies (CSAS). To ensure that   the dispensary employs good dispensing practice & complies with legal and   regulatory requirements relating to veterinary medicines.


Roles & Responsibilities:

  •   Maintain   standard operating procedures for the small animal dispensary.
  •   To assist with the dispensary   budget.
  •   Ensure stock levels are   appropriate in the dispensary, and that stock is electronically recorded and   put away promptly. To ensure that stock is rotated properly to avoid out of   date stock.
  •   To oversee routine stock levels   of pre-counted drugs & ready-to-use injectable skin tests.
  •   Dispense in-patient drug   requests.
  •   Dispense and post external drug   requests to existing clients.
  •   Charge appropriately where   drugs are dispensed. Check client invoices.
  •   Organise   dispensary stock takes either annually or more frequently as required.
  •   Strictly monitor and record   controlled drugs held within the dispensary. Daily/weekly stock takes of all   controlled drugs. Investigate   discrepancies where required. Ensure   compliance and best practice for ordering controlled drugs and controlled   drug disposal.
  •   Temperature control of   dispensary room & fridges on a daily basis.
  •   To ensure dispensary/staff   comply with all acts of law and regulatory requirements relating to the use   of all classifications of drugs which are purchased & held as stock in   CSAS.
  •   Provide training to existing   and new staff in controlled drug and dispensary procedures.
  •   Add /delete/edit/update stock items   and prices on the clinical database (CDB) as necessary.
  •   Liaise with the wholesale   supplier for placing orders. Liaise   with the Store Manager on stock matters, purchasing, discounts & offers. Liaise with pharmaceutical reps regarding   offers and new products. Liaise with   other suppliers and use prescriptions to order where needed.
  •   Reporting of suspected adverse   reactions.
  •   Ensure strict adherence to   regulatory requirements and contribute to ongoing management of successful   registration with regulatory bodies (e.g. Veterinary Medicines Directorate,   RCVS).
  •   Be responsible for ordering and   maintaining stock of canine and feline blood supply products.
  •   To   liaise with AHT Health & Safety Officer regarding risk assessments, COSHH   assessments, material safety data sheets & any other relevant health   & safety issues.
  •   Ensure security is maintained   at all times within dispensary. Ensure all staff & designated personnel   are made aware of standard operating procedures within dispensary.
  •   Ensure the dispensary area is   kept clean & tidy. All waste disposed of correctly.
  •   Communicate effectively with   line manager, accounts department, secretaries, clinicians and nursing staff   to provide the best possible support within CSAS.


Necessary   Skills/Aptitude/



  •   Meticulous attention to detail regarding   stock control. Experience of working within a veterinary dispensary. An   understanding of drug types. Appreciation of the legal and regulatory   guidelines regarding veterinary drugs. Proud caretaking of the entire   dispensary areas. Excellent communicator with a can-do attitude. Confidence   to be firm with staff not following dispensary protocols.

Desirable   Skills/Aptitude/



  •   Someone who enjoys pharmacology and   everything it entails.
  •   Meticulous daily routines.
  •   Experience within a veterinary environment.

  •   Ideally SQP (Suitably Qualified Person).
  •   Experienced RVN (Registered Veterinary   Nurse without SQP would be considered.
  •   Training for SQP qualifications encouraged   for those who do not hold them.
