I'm really excited to launch our new forum discussion series, the VetNurse.co.uk Clinical Article Club.

It's a bit like a book club, where you discuss articles and their implications for your work with each other, and, as a result of our new partnership with Improve Veterinary Practice, with the author, who can can put your questions to.

More about this new Clinical Article Club here, and for our first discussion, I am delighted to introduce Tom Towey, an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Emergency & Critical Care to talk about his article "Newborn resuscitation following dystocia or caesarean section.”

I must emphasis the absolutely crucial importance of this discussion being at all times friendly, welcoming and collaborative so that all newcomers feel able to take advantage of this opportunity to ask questions of our authors, and to discuss the practical implications of an article with their fellow nurses.

With that out of the way, first read Tom's article, then who’d like to kick off with a question for Tom, or to comment or discuss some aspect of the article?

NCert query

Hi, has anyone done the NCert Surgical? It sounds really interesting as it appears to contain most of the subjects that I'm most interested in but I just wondered how difficult it is to fit around work and kids (especially if you haven't studied properly for a while and have dyslexia) and also whether it brings extra value to you within the practice (from also a monetary perspective if you had fund it yourself). Or would there have been a different NCert you would have chosen instead? Thanks in advance for any help

Chlorhexidine, to dilute or not

Hi, could you all tell me whether you are diluting hibiscrub for surgical scrub sites please. I'm talking closed skin, no open wounds etc. Would you clean post op with tap water or saline? I am personally diluted Hibi and then tap water post.
Looking for some advice please ?

I'd like to do a ECC certificate
I know Vets Now do one and also Improve International (Ncert) .

Besides the price difference , what is your opinion ?

I'm feel a classroom based course would be better for me, but I'm also hearing fabulous things about the Vets Now Course so I'm undecided..

Any thoughts would be gratefully appreciated

Many thanks

ET tubes
Hello :) I have seen this with all sorts of disinfectants, particularly if they are left soaking in it for ages or if they are not rinsed properly. To the best of my knowledge there is no widely accepted / standard protocol for cleaning them because they are meant to be single use. Personally I like to disinfect them in the Medistel type of disinfectants but again I have seen problems when soaked for too long / insufficient rinsing afterwards. Others may have differing opinions on this protocol but I like to inflate the cuff, soak and clean in enzymatic cleaner (brush through tubes, pipe cleaners for small ones), disinfect, rinse then dry, deflate cuff before they go back in the drawer (having tubes on the wall on a rack is another story..) Why not come up with a protocol and then use it for a clinical audit..? That way you can make an informed judgement whether what you are doing is OK, change accordingly, and use for PSS inspection (if applicable!)
Best wishes
Hi there,

We have used many disinfectants over the years for ET tubes and have had similar problems with patient reactions, around 6 years ago we started steeping our ET tubes in Milton sterilising fluid/tablets and since we introduced this, we have not had a single reaction.

Hope this helps!
