Is anyone else solely or mainly a consulting nurse?

Do you get to do more than just nail clips and post op checks? Are you busy enough? I'm not being challenged and spending too much time trying to fill in time between consults.

Also, if it comes to it, how would anyone go about looking for a role as a "busy consulting nurse"??

Are nurses using the old style badge, or do we have to buy a new one?

A weird one which I am hoping you can help with.

We had a rat in for a very large lump removal from its right groin/lower abdomen. This has left a large wound to heal. We have placed intradermal sutures and glue as the rat is a known chewer. Any ideas for preventing wound trauma?

With a collar he pushed it off, we tried a sock too small, next sock too big, now trying a sock in-between. Tried dressing but chewed that off. Given their nature what have you tried that might work this time?

All advise gratefully received

What do you think about rubber mat table tops, esp in theatre?

Does anyone have any evidence or views on rubber mats on table tops especially in theatre? On environmental swabbing the rubber mat in our theatre came back harbouring nasties twice (I can't rememeber what as I don't have the results with me). I don't know if it's our cleaning protocol or that rubber is hard to disinfect properly with all the scores and marks in it?

I haven't swabbed the ones in consult rooms yet!

Can anyone help me with Pain Score SOPs?

Tangent of: SOP'S Help save my sanity

Following on from this discussion, Robocop has been kind enough to share her SOPs with me, and the plan now is to first share them here for discussion, so you can suggest additions etc. That way, we can make them not just any old SOPs, but Marks and Spencer SOPs, so to speak.

System for noting collected meds and flea/worm treatments

Hi. I guess this is more for Flea and worm treatments.

I have taken it upon myself to regualrly sort through the dispensed medications and chase up the uncollected meds and F/W treatments. We regularly have issues with the computers not communicating with the printer so labels are often reprinted from the reception. On occasion the rogue labels print out later and are put up by the next unsuspecting person who feels like making up all the meds there are labels for. At the moment we just don't have enough staff or the room in the practice to dedicate someone to pharmacy duty.

In all its a pretty simple thing to go through the medications when can see if paid the account but when it comes to the F/W treatment dispensed under the Practice Health Plan, these will come up as a zero balance so its a bit of a guessing game. When I resort to calling the client to enquire/remind I have to word my phrases carefully. I have asked for staff to make a little note to say meds collected or labels reprinted and in most part they remember (and its awesome) but when its super busy it can get forgotten.

I have worked on some systems which automatically state if a label was reprinted which was super helpful but unfortuantely ours does not (but will be making the suggestion). Other than making a new product/procedure that replys on staff remembering to find and click when handing over meds does anyone have any systems in place that works.
