I recieved my annual pay review from my employer who (in error) printed my colleagues pay review on the back of my letter! It turned out that my colleague who is unqualified and untraining was getting more salary

Re: Unqualified getting paid more than RVN

I agree with Sal... although I can understand why you feel like your qualification is not recognised in your pay. . bit of a toughie!
the nurse who has been there the longest gets the better wage and it in no way reflects the skills that person may have
Thats ture! My hourly rate is the same as the parctice manager and I'm not qualified! - It's purley because I've been in the same practice for nealry 10yrs and - in my boss' words - 'shown dedication'

Don't let this drive a wedge between you and the unqualifed nurse.. hopefully you'll get the wage you deserve. xx

Re: Unqualified getting paid more than RVN

this really isnt that unusual

I have worked at at least 3 places where the reception staff earn more than a qualified nurse - a major national charity where reception and kennel staff with no qualifications have much better chance of earning a decent wage, a large national corporate who also values their reception staff more than their qualified nurses, a small private practice where as a head nurse I was taking home less than the unqualified nursing assistant and working more hours into the bargain!

Not making excuses but in some places the reception staff really do earn their money (esp charity).

Sometimes the discrepancy in hourly rate can come about in the following way - a practice is say offering 10,000 pa for nursing staff and over ie the next few years that is always the rate that is offered , so a nurse who has just started will get the 10k wage the same as one that started a few years earlier but because the 10k wage is subject to an annual review and wage rise the nurse who has been there the longest gets the better wage and it in no way reflects the skills that person may have.

Hope that makes sense been awake since the small hours and it is now catching up with me

Re: Unqualified getting paid more than RVN

This one of the biggest things that winds me up about vets. Some of them just don't appreciate their nurses! Or maybe they are of the thining 'you do this for the love of the job, not to earn a decent wage"

Personally I think it's unfair that you get paid less than an unqualified nurse, but as someone has already suggested maybe more to do with period that s/he has worked for the current practice.

I have suggested on other threads that nurse wages need to have proper structure such as banding (which the NHS has now got)

Its totally wrong though. I think its nice that they acknowlege how long people have been there but your pay should be way above hers for the pure fact you are qualified.

Im a qualified ANA, ok so its not a rvn level qualification, but i get paid the same as a lady who does admin/auxillary nursing on our place, i find that annoying so can see where your coming from

Re: Unqualified getting paid more than RVN

Thanks for your replies,

Yes she has been working there about 2-3 years more than me, but like you say we 'should' be doing completely different jobs legally!
