Hi everyone

Interesting thread. The whole veggie / meaty thing is one of those topics that is guaranteed to get people's hackles up.

It IS an interesting debate, but only if both sides of the debate can argue their case without making it personal, either to an individual, or to a group. By all means discuss whether a human's dentition is that of an omnivore, or what other things we buy have an impact on animals. But don't describe meat eaters as ignorant (they are no more ignorant than vegetable eaters), or have a pop at any one member of the community.

I have deleted the post from Rita. Having read it and reread it, I am still not absolutely clear who it was directed at, and I think it quite reasonable for Caro to have been upset by it.

Rita, if you read this, please ensure that you make it clear who you are replying to in a post.

Thread now locked. By all means discuss vegetarianism etc again in a new thread, but for heavens sake, don't make it personal.

And I have a problem with intollerance. Being a vegetarian or not being a vegetarian is a personal choice. It is also a personal choice if somebody wants to know how the food on their plate is produced or not. It isnt for somebody else to make a choice on their behalf, if somebody chooses not to know then I will respect that choice - it might be at variance to what I believe but it is their choice.

Firstly apologies for not returning to this thread - Ive had computor problems, and have only just been able to get online

Secondly - apologies for the agressive and intolerant tone in my OP, hands up, my bad

I haven't read the rest of the thread either yet, but just wanted to say that I think my frustration mainly stems from my family, who buy value meat, eat meat everyday, and won't consider changing.

And Steph (I think it was Steph), honestly, no, I don't often consider the impact of buying fruit and veg etc - never thought about it before... I will do now though!

Anyways - off to read the rest of the thread! I'm gonna change the thread title too (If I can) - Not an excuse, but it was late, I'd had a few beers, and had just had a very infuriating conversation with my sister, so I typed in anger/frustration...

Not good! Especially when your PC dies soon after!

I didn't expect to see all this in less than a day!

Steph I think you have confused me with someone else as I didn't start the thread or dictate to anyone what they were eating... in fact I went to great lengths to say thats not what I was doing!

What a shame that it got so out of hand and a group of grown ups couldn't discuss something rationally.

Now lets enjoy our weekend instead of arguing over who is...um....arguing.

maybe Phrin would like to lock the thread and let that be an end to it - it shouldnt have gone on so long I agree and also I agree that there have been some pretty antagonistic posts and I also agree I have posted a couple in reply to others against my better judgement

I really do not see the point of this thread!

I think there are a lot worse things going on in this world than animals being raised and killed for meat.

I eat meat, I know where it comes from and would love to be able to raise my own animals for meat but don't have the space. Doesn't mean I don't love animals. Everyone is free to make their own choice and not to be judged for it.

Like has been said many times, everyone has their views and is passionate about them. But still this thread is getting silly!

I am not going into this to antagonise or wind anyone up - just give my reasons for doing what I do

I eat meat and will continue to eat meat as much as I love animals and would never wish for any animal to suffer.

In the world, animals eat other animals. They kill other animals and leave them where they are without eating them on occasion - this is seen as nature and nothing out of the ordinary.

Humans eat meat and kill to do so, just on a larger and more organised scale.

Much is said of nature and humans, and for some reason we are seen as seperate to nature by many. I can see the arguements to say we are bigger than nature and we now control nature to a point, but why does this change the fact that we ARE nature? Yes what we do in farming animals is not what would happen if we weren't here, but we are and we need to work with that.

If we were to 'stop interfering with nature' then there would be far more to consider, the same as if we were to try to remove all the input humans have had... how many of you would support the killing of all rabbits? After all, rabbits are not native to this country, they were brought over to be farmed and when they were first introduced we even built the warrens for them to help them to survive, but the thought of killing all the rabbits in the country would be pretty unpalatable...

Wandered a bit from my train of thought there, but basically my killing and eating another animal is, in my mind, nothing unnatural, and at least I can say I ate it unlike the cat that killed my hand reared wood pigeon last week!

Also, no I do not kill my own food and yes, I would find it hard to do if I had to, but if I could do it quickly and humanely I would and although I would feel some sadness, I would do it as I feel I would be wrong to eat meat otherwise.
