No, I totally agree SmegSlayer. It is very worrying the difference in advice given, when we are all meant to be reading from the same hymn book. The RCVS runs several IV update days each year, for IV's to be brought up to date on a few issues or changes, and in the mean time EV's feedback to Heads of Centres and in turn then to IV's. However, it seems that there are differences when there should not be.

I can only hope that with the new scheme, there will be less of this, and the guidance will be clearer.

As you can maybe tell, i'm a happy bunny Sooo desperate to get it all finished in 4 weeks yet hardly any cases coming in at the mo! So this really helps!

Hi Vicky,

Yes, that would be fine to use as reflection for the PD. You can just write this down (assessor) or record, whatever is easiest. To be honest, when I was IV'ing a portfolio I had a PD submitted on a dictaphone, so any form of recording is ok, though you need to detail where the evidence for the criteria is on the recording, so that the IV can find it easily (eg. how far along in the recording it is (timings)).

That's interesting to know, we've done a jaw repair on and RTA (a few weeks ago), so i should be able to use that by doing a professional discussion? Does the discussion have to be recorded or can we write down what we discussed?

Thank you you may have just my life a hell of a lot easier and less stressful (trying to finish portfolio in next 4 weeks and have A LOT to do!)

Microchip should not be accepted as an Implant. An implant has to be something placed surgically - gentamycin beads / pins / plates / jaw wiring / etc. Anything that stays in place for a few days, excepting sutures / staples. Would drains are a seperate criteria in the NOS.

If you cannot evidence it practically, you need to perform a Professional Discussion with your assessor. This is where they ask you to reflect on any previous experiences you have had with implants, and to explain what you did / have seen. Simulations are not acceptable at Level 3. This can be videod and submitted either on a DVD or as a file on a storage device to accompany the evidence sheet.

There is a PD form on the RCVS disc or on the RCVS website.

we were told it had to be an orthopaedic implant by our IV, managed to get away with suture material used to repair a ruptured cruciate.

wish we could have used a microchip, would have been soooooo much easier!

Thats what our IV advised us to do, so student wrote up cat spay which also had a microchip. I made sure the student talked about preparing it- checking sterile packaging, reading ok etc and also how she prepared the animal.

Our IV told us we could use a microchip as an implant, dont think it specifies it as a surgical implant.

SCARY!!!! My boss does cruciate at our other hosp so can go there to assist. I've been in my place for 3 years though and get really scared of working with people i don't know....the thought of being a locum terrifies me!!! Believe it or not i'm actually a really shy person!
