I'm not even a SVN (yet) and even I think this is a terrible idea. If they're trying to clean up the Medivet scandal then this is definitely not the right way to go about it. All this will do is encourage unqualified practise.

You can't just learn about anaesthesia as a stand alone subject this is why Veterinary Nursing is taught over two years minimum.

You have to understand anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, surgical/medical consideration. I'm sorry this really doesn't help out a practice. Yes you would learn stuff regarding anaesthesia. BUT the only way for practices to move forward and allow nurses to train and qualify .

If they are willing to let you do this course then they should be willing for you to do your VN training! Its all about investment in staff.

I totally agree with you! It's a huge huge field to learn! I was just stating that for someone who wants a little insight or knowledge - then its ideal.. esp if they work in a non TP. And for me.. i know my boss would not pay for me.. so it would be something I'd have to fund myself! But rather than do that.. I'm going to concentrate on finding a TP when my son is in high school.. and like you say - train to qualify!

to me this is training on the cheap - builders equivalent of a barrow job - and it remains to be seen how useful it will be. I agree that training is good for those that dont have any however I am very concerned that this may confer responsibilites that the student is ill prepared for . I can see this resulting in accidents people will come to regret for a very long time. So much for raising public confidence in veterinary practice
