Methadone & Morphine in denaturisation kits (from CPC) as our branch of CPC our waste goes to doesn't have license to dispose in the normal white pots with red tops, so we use dentaturisation kits

The only licenced veterinary schedule 2 drug is pethidine. Pethidine is pants as an analgesic. That said; I wish I'd been given pethidine in A&E when I fractured my foot, as opposed to the paracetamol I was offered!

However, commonly used schedule 2 drugs include: morphine, methadone, fentanyl, and alfentanil.

Schedule 1 drugs are those with no therapeutic use (unless under licence) e.g opium, heroin, LSD and so on.

Ketamine usage/recording is not compulsory but recommended due to its recreational use.

I think *should know* S2 drugs are the pure opiods - methadone, morphine etc

Saying that, I do remember that buprenorphine is the only ? S3 drug that doesn't need to be documented

Buprenorphine is schedule 3.

Schedule 2 drugs should be disposed of as per BSAVA guidelines above, however, this practically is for out of date drugs in large volumes. In use 'disposals', e.g dispose of 0.6ml of a 2ml vial of fentanyl should be witnessed by a veterinary surgeon and recorded.

The disposal method should render the drug irretrievable by any means. Previously, squirting onto cotton wool, cat litter, sand and injecting into cadavers etc has been recommended. Denaturing kits are available and aren't that expensive. Schedule 2 drugs are not to be messed with and should be taken seriously. The Home Office would take a very dim view on poor record keeping and poor disposal - their use, is essentially a privilige that can be taken away very easily - and staff prosecuted to boot.

Didn't CPC insit they go into white bins with Red Lids? is this wrong?! Did some audit thing at work, and it wasn't an option on the list :o/ Only controlled drugs I have is buprecare....I think that's all I have, no ketamin, no morphine, as the 28d rule means it all goes out of date after 1 use :o/

We were taught at college that you need to get a policeman in to observe you dispose of them - ie break vials, draw up and spray onto sand/litter in a doop bin or similar

HOWEVER! I have never had the opportunity arise to drag a copper into the practice, until recently, when we discovered our methadone was out of date.... cue an excited gaggle of nurses asking the boss if we could phone the police... he said 'No - my wifes a pharmacist, I'll find out what to do from her'

Booo! Still waiting for the verdict from the bosses wife!
