One vet had gone on a house call and the other vet was on a half day. We had only just been saying what would happen if a rta came in and then 2 mins later

Re: Grrrr im so frustrated!!

Well done you Hope hope the kitty carries on recovering well

Re: Grrrr im so frustrated!!

Yay - good luck for the wee kittie!

Re: Grrrr im so frustrated!!

Well the little fella had his leg amputated and when i left this afternoon he was really bright and happy (and dosed up on vetergesic hehe). He also has a dislocated hip which keeps popping back out . But he is doing really well and should be home tomorrow

Re: Grrrr im so frustrated!!

Thanks Rhiannon, you have made my day xx

Re: Grrrr im so frustrated!!

Well done. Your VS directed to give the meds so it's up to her, but she obviously trusts you because you're so capable. I see that you might be starting your VN training...really hope you do, sounds like you're going to make a great VN. Good luck!

Re: Grrrr im so frustrated!!

When i spoke to the vet she did ask me to give vetergesic and rimadyl, which i did. I know im probably not supposed to. I was giving him 02 with a mask and at times he wasnt happy about it so since he was a good colour i just held it by his face but didnt force it onto him.

He is doing ok, he is having his leg amputated tomorrow. We did some concious xrays of his chest/abdo but they didnt show much up. When he is ga'd tomorrow they are gonna take some more pics because they vet is concerned that he has a dislocated hip. He has gone over to our hospital for the night and is being given ivft and pain relief. Bless him, he is so sweet and kept looking into my eyes and purring.

Re: Grrrr im so frustrated!!

Sounds like you did great! The only thing I would consider in future (I'm sure you already did so in this case) when giving O2 to a patient via a face-mask (if indeed that's what you were doing) is to be sure it is well-tolerated by the patient.

For example if your patient's colour is good but giving the O2 is stressing the dyspnoeic patient out then I wouldn't give the O2.

If the patient was cyanotic then I would carefully persist with the O2 therapy even if the patient wasn't tolerating it very well, but I would use subtle placement of the facemask and minimal restraint.

However, we have a Krusse oxygen tent, it didn't cost very much, it's really well padded and is heated too, an excellent piece of kit for stressed cats needing O2.

Re: Grrrr im so frustrated!!

i would have taken TPR, o2 therapy, kept warm, managed any bleeding which is exactly what you did

as tracy said administering pain relief and placing iv cath if very flat would be the only thing that a QVN could have done.

Was there any way you could have called a vet to authorise giving pain relief, such as vetergesic (nsaids not good in rta case). Thats about all additionally a VN could do, as (technically) only VN's can give medication on direction of a vet. But....if the cat is not yet under the care of a VS, that is also tenuous.

You did well to stay calm and prepare all needed. (don't want to sound patronising)

How is the little fella doing now?
