I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences (no horror stories please) with me regarding locum nurse work.
I've worked at the same veterinary practice for seven years and need a change. I thought locum nursing would be a good

Re: Starting out as a locum nurse

Thanks for the info Steph.

I hopefully start early september so i'm just trying to ask all the questions now rather then leaving it while the last minute, then panicing about it.

I'll let you know how i get on.

Thanks again

I would prob carry a stethoscope, thermometer and possibly even a pen torch, pens of course, scissors and even a pair of small artery forceps....you never know when these will come in handy!!!

invest in your own uniforms and a plain name badge with your name and qualifications on it

Re: Starting out as a locum nurse

Thanks Maisy, it makes me feel a bit more confident about the months ahead.

Are ther any pieces of equipment you would recommend i carry with me i.e. stethoscope.

Did you end up with a full time position after locumming in a practice?

Thanks again

Its good to see different practices and see how they work without having the normal hassle that goes with permanent employment!

I didn't go in the day before, but most places I worked at I was staying in staff accommodation so would have a look around when i got there the night before. The other staff were normally friendly and helpful to show you around or go through protocols etc, some places just chucked you in and you get on with it!

I'd recommend it though as you can work in some great practices, and if you don't, you know you won't be there long. I worked in referral practices, emergency clinics as well as little sole charge places and hospitals so some good variation for experience. Like you I had been in my previous job for 6 years and was in a rut so locuming definitely helped with that.

Good Luck!
