If it's muscle spasm they may be happier to prescribe a short course of diazepam - they will know your husband, rather than some random A&E doc who doesn't have access to your husband's history.

Unless he's in acute spasm then he should try to keep moving (nothing strenuous!) as this will help to reduce the risk of further spasms. When my neck is very bad I find it comfier to be propped up in bed rather than lieing down and you could employ some distraction techniques, such as a favourite CD or DVD (again, nothing too strenuous!!) as they are becoming quite popular during dental treatment, etc.

Hope he gets early referral for physio or similar soon.

Re: car crash

[quote user="spud x"]

I would think that a cold compress would be better post injury.. Cold slows down the blood flow, therefore helping reduce swelling.. it also acts as a pain relief! Hot water/compress will only encourage swelling. . Saything that.. I think hot compress/bath is good for when the swelling has gone down and you want to encourage blood flow to help repair muscles.

The reason you
should use ice instead of heat is that heat increases blood flow which can
then increase inflammation and pain leading to a slower recovery. So,
although a hot shower or warm bath may feel soothing, you may actually
doing yourself more harm than good with heat.
