If you have to work a bank hol then you will be entitled to a day of in lieu for doing so.
We would usually work a half day on the saturday then work sun/ mon/ tue as we would a normal sunday- have 1 vet and 1 nurse working and open for an hour in the afternoon to see urgent cases. We've always found this works well as 4 days is a long time to be shut for a practice which covers it's own out of hours.
With regards to having time off for visiting etc I've always got my nurses together a month or so before christmas and asked for requests, I've found it usually works out pretty fair as those who prefer christmas off will usually offer to work new year and vice versa. There are enough of us to all do 1 day each over the christmas/ new year period.

Re: christmas and bank ??

[quote user="spud x"]

i know about that, getting told one thing at the interview, then your contract says something different but you trust them and sign anyway, and then you get shit on...yep, been there! guess it's a lesson learned...

Does it affect your yearly holiday allowance at all ie were you given a set amount of holidays in addition to bank holidays or were your total holidays including bank holidays?
