There are now 2 parts to the RCVS Level 3 VN Diploma

Part 1 - 515 hours guided learning hours (college, blended learning, homework etc)

Part 2 - 200 hours (as above)

through out part 1&2 there are 'assignments' that need to be written, they are basically case studies on medical, surgical, nursing, ethics, communication etc they will have a word limit and will be marked by your tutor at college.

As well as college you must do a minimum of 1100 practice hours in a TP or an aTP. Either employed or voluntary. The NPL will be carried out here with the support of a clinical coach (assessor)

Written exams are done at the end of part one (which includes A&P, nursing, H&S, ethics, Husbandry, diagnostics, theatre practice, principles of anaesthesia, vet meds, etc) So allot of questions to cover this I would imagine!

At the end of part 2 there will be the OSCE's 12 - 14 stations.

There are also a couple of internal exams run by the course provider and moderated by the RCVS.

So that is it really! Nothing really extra apart from unit 19 preparing for prefessional registration (Level 4) and more of an emphasis on practical application which can only be a good thing!

Re: 2010 VETERINARY NURSE NEW COURSE

Have you downloaded the .pdf handbook from the RCVS website? There's still not a huge amount of clear information available as I know a lot of the colleges are still trying to reconfigure their courses, but if you go to the link below and download the .pdf you'll be able to get a bit more info about how the new diploma is to be structured.

http://www.rcvs.org.uk/Templates/InternalVNAward.asp?NodeID=5215170

You want the 'final draft qualification handbook'. It's the first link.

Re: 2010 VETERINARY NURSE NEW COURSE

I will be transfering from NVQ level 2 to the diploma in sept...
I will be doing a transitional course. So some units will be ticked off as such as a transferable skill if related to portfolio and APL from the NVQ units.
My college is saying i have another year and a half left, and i think exams will be as they are now, so july next year, practicals im not exactly sure on... i know they will anything upto 12-15 practical tasks to complete. More than there was on NVQ.
Exams should still be MCQ's.
There will be an online nursing progress log (NPL) instead of the portfolio to do.
As it is now a level 3 diploma course, more assignments will have to be done as far as im aware, and one will prob be on ethics and responsibility (something to do with now being RVN's and being responsible for ourselves).

I think thats it... i apologise if i have any points wrong, feel free to correct me if im wrong. x

Re: 2010 VETERINARY NURSE NEW COURSE

I'm not sure about new starters but i'm going to be transitioning from old to new course structure. What will you be doing? If you're transitioning i know vaguely that my college will be teaching the 2nd year of the new diploma plus the stuff from the 1st year course that we obviously haven't been taught on the old system, and we can APL everything else. But this may take more than a year - possibly 12-15ths months, therefore extending the whole thing by another year.
