The only veterinary dentist I know started out as a vet and specialised but he says he often has to attend human dentistry CPD in the UK as it doesn't exist at the level he needs here, I think in the US there is more. He spends an average of 6-8k/ year to keep upto date ...eeek ! He is fab ..I don't let anyone else near my pets teeth now for anything beyond a descale and polish...when you think about it it is like asking a GP to do your filling ..errr no thanks

lol! Its ok, hes been doing it for donkeys years. I'm not sure how they did it, I'll ask next time hes in. His human practice in in harley st, how posh are we?! Our foxes and badgers have only the best you know, lol!

I didn't mean he wasn't legit

I think it is fabulous that disciplines such as veterinary medicine & dentistry can 'cross over' - each helping the other to learn more, and ultimatley for the benefit of the patient.

I was really just wondering about the VS Act, and how it BECOMES legit for a dentist to start treating animals- if that makes sense?

This guy also treated our tiger at Paignton zoo when HE had a broken canine... obviously the GA etc was entirely done by our vet and nurse, but the root canal was him and his nurse. I wasn't working here at the time but I've read the report and its a lot more detailed and thorough than some that other veterinary specialists write!!!

I know a qualified Human Dentist who now specialises in veterinary dentistry!

He in fact co-runs the BVNA dental certificate.

Shame we don't have a specialised VETERINARY RADIOGRAPHY qualification

I think quite a few veterinary dental specialists started off life as human dentists.
