I know theres a thread about the cat but about the other things he has done?
The labrador with the arthritus in his foot or replacing the tumour in that dogs leg! Or even better fixing that chinchillas

Re: The Bionic Vet

ignore me... i just finished watchin the one with the collie cross and i have confused the two! lol

I have to say I would agree with you there, some of the things he does are fantastic but I too draw the line with the osteosarcs, when they showed that dog playing at the end of the show he was still lame and therefore still uncomfortable on that leg. If the owners were so keen to have surgery to extend his life why not apmutate the dog's leg, he was a young dog that could cope with it and would have had a very quick recovery from surgery instead of two months taken to recover out of his short life.
are you sure the dog was lame on the leg from pain and not just from nerve damage?? to expect a dog like that to have full 'normal' movement in joints and muscle after that much trauma to the nerves, bones, muscle, tissue... etc i think you would be a bit presumptuous. I mean the spine was farked! as well as the knee joint!

I dont think I have ever worked anywhere where the ops list has been decided on the availability of nursing staff 'right we need to get on the nurses finish at 8' - usually its been a case of 'we ( as in the royal we ) will be finishing late' Its great if thats what really happens because that shows some respect for the nurses time. ( or there is the possibility the overtime rate is quite expensive if used ) But giving the benefit of the doubt maybe it is respect?
I have to say Sal, that our practice is very much like that! There have been days we have had to cancel non urgent operations due to little or no nursing staff. Maybe its because we have such a busy workload, that the role of the nurse is a very important one in the working day.

On saying that, all our vets do is operate - we do the rest - x-rays, fluid therapy, bandage changes/redresses, blood samples, etc etc

Maybe we are one of the lucky practices? Sometimes I wonder though lol!!

Re: The Bionic Vet
I'm all about Oscar the cat, that was wonderful to see.

But that labrador, I don't feel 100% about- He said it took two months to recover, was then going to start chemo, and all of that for a maximum two more years life? (possibly a lot less, and with ongoing chemo all that time etc.)

That to me did not look like a good gamble on quality of life.

I can see your point, but, the Labrador may have had his life extended and with good QOL. What is wrong with that? Yes he took two months to recover but he now has fantastic QOL and is happy......?

As someone who has lost 3 dogs to osteosarc, I have to disagree, obv this has not happened to these people before, and when she was ssaying she would do it agin if any of her other dogs in the future got it..... I think I can pretty much gaurantee she wont. You know whay.... because you know they are going to die, and yes it may...... and its a very optimistic maybe 2 years, but I give it a yr max with the chemo..... without 1month-4 tops, and during that time you look at every sniffle, and worry your *** off at the slightest change in demeanour..... That is not enjoying your pet, thats waiting on it dying.

Sorry Claire if I am coming across as annoyed, and I have looked at this thread a few times today, and just could not let it go without saying my piece on it.

Ostesarcs... means its already somewhere else, it just has not reared it's ugly head yet.

My 1st dog who died was 1 yr old, Igot 1 month before she stopped eating and could not walk to the end of the garden path....because it was in her lungs, my second was 14 yrs old and pts also 1 month after onset lameness. I got 4 months out of my third before she fractured her leg and I had to put her to sleep. I would never put any animal through that type of surgery, and any of mine who get it in the future will be pts at diagnosis, as I will not put myself through the fracture scenario again.
That's poor time management then on his part! Our vets used either to consult or operate, unless it was an emergency.

Re: The Bionic Vet

midnight, pah...that's early. Did theatre on call for years and years, you can bet your life the septic bellies would crash and burn 10 minutes from leaving theatre in ITU - meanwhile you had 2 hours of cleaning ahead....that's life, that's the job, I choose to do it..

Re: The Bionic Vet

Maybe but from what i've heard he does loads of consults all day then starts ops at 5-6pm.

It's very interesting but I would HATE to work their- I'd die of boredom just dealing with orthopaedics, actually would be very happy to never go into theatre again. Just do medical nursing
