So you would have no objection to paying the same as a client if your animal was having major surgery ????

I am quite aware that it is a business, there are profits and then there is sheer greed.
No that isnt what I said. I have received staff discounts at a few places and some places not but I thought people should be aware that this can come back and bite you if it then screws you up with your tax and you end up on a BR coding whilst it is investigated by IR - which can take a very long time in the scheme of things and by the time IR have finished screwing things up could cost both you and your employer more than the discount was worth

Staff discounts or 'perks' are not an automatic right of the employee in any business - sometimes they are earned and sometimes they are just not given. Thats the way of the world, but even if they are given somebody somewhere will be paying for them

Re: Wages

So you would have no objection to paying the same as a client if your animal was having major surgery ????

I totally think you should get staff discount. I understand it's a business but think of all the extra work most nurses put in and never get paid/thanked for. It doesn't hurt the practices to treat their animals at cost price. Aslong as the practice isn't making a loss then I don't see the problem.

Re: Wages
We all know the mark up on procedures and Drugs so why should Staff pay the same as Clients ???
I do hope you've gotyour figures wrong because:

****************************************************************************************

What are the current rates of the national minimum wage?

There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1 October 2009
        are:

£5.80 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older

a development rate of £4.83 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive

£3.57 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age

***************************************************************************************

so the minimum should be £11,300

Re: Wages

I'm 20 year old SVN, working a 45 hr week, and I get £10,900.

I never assume that I get staff discount, it's always a privilige if I get reduced cost treatment.

Re: Wages

I really find it incredible that some Vets do not give a staff discount. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tight B******s
I am an SVN (so unqualified) and with under a year's experience and get £7.50 an hour (hourly pay was my choice) in a practice in South London. Would be 16k a year with no on call or out of hours, but saturday working now and then is paid at the normal rate.

They are renowned for paying pretty well at my practice though.

My journey to work is under 10 minutes driving, that was down to sheer luck though, finding a practice near home after commuting 1.5 hours each way on minimum wage at my old place!

On the bummer side, we don't get any staff discount, at all!

I'm about to start my nurse training in september and they have offered around 12k. I am going to struggle like mad for the next 3 yrs as i have a flat to pay for, bills, a car etc etc. Im an animal nursing assistant at the moment and i am on 15.5k and only just get by. The pay cut will kill me. No social life for me anymore!!

15.5k for an ANA! I was on that as a qualified at my last job. It amazes me how much wages vary.
