No that isnt what I said. I have received staff discounts at a few places and some places not but I thought people should be aware that this can come back and bite you if it then screws you up with your tax and you end up on a BR coding whilst it is investigated by IR - which can take a very long time in the scheme of things and by the time IR have finished screwing things up could cost both you and your employer more than the discount was worth

Staff discounts or 'perks' are not an automatic right of the employee in any business - sometimes they are earned and sometimes they are just not given. Thats the way of the world, but even if they are given somebody somewhere will be paying for them

I totally think you should get staff discount. I understand it's a business but think of all the extra work most nurses put in and never get paid/thanked for. It doesn't hurt the practices to treat their animals at cost price. Aslong as the practice isn't making a loss then I don't see the problem.

It's called a perk of the job.! It's also good for Staff morale as it shows appreciation for all the hard work done. We all know the mark up on procedures and Drugs so why should Staff pay the same as Clients ??? You could look at it from another point of view.

Why should they give staff a discount? I never assume that I get staff discount, it's always a privilige if I get reduced cost treatment.

Yes this is true. When I was in my trainig practice I worked 42 hrs a week for an apprentice allowance of £35 year 1 and £40 year two. I also used to spend 3 hours a day travelling to and from work.

It does really make me appreciate what I get now though.

Maybe I'm being a bit special and do in fact work a 40hr week... 9hr days but 1hr lunch break. I think of it as 45hrs because that's how long I spend at work every week, but in the eyes of the law I guess it's probably 40.

But still, rubbishy wages I think.

If a SVN is classed as an apprentice, then minimum wage does not apply for the first year of any apprenticeship. I was getting £90 for a 40 hour week at a stables.

I pay my 14-16 year old helpers £4 an hour!!!! I also can't believe you're expected to work a 45 hour week.

That is £5.14 per hour. At your age, that is below minimum wage and therefore illegal. I can only assume that your college day is unpaid - meaning that you are actually officially working less than 40 hours a week? But then your wage should go up if you then work when on college holidays....

I've said it before the problem is that nearly all veterinary practices are privately owned and therefore provided that employers pay above NMW then they are ok as far as the law is concerned. I really do think we should go towards a banding system as they do in the NHS.

I do think that it's a bit tight that we don't get any discount, even if we were to order stuff we want to buy we have to pay the retail, not the cost or cost plus vat etc... Particularly with stuff we do ourselfs like dentals or running in house bloods.

I agree it's not a right that we get a discount, but the vast majority of businesses do give something to staff these days...

In my practice, a kitten course costs £62, or another vet just as close to me it's £40... It just seems weird to me that with the number of animals I have, it makes a lot more sense for me to go to the other practice due to the cost, rather than the one I work in!

I am happy with my wage, and I work in Scotland..., I do 37.5 hrs a week and 1 in eight weekend days, I do the odd night through the week for which I am paid an hourly rate for and the following day I get off(which is law btw) and 1 weekend in 8 of nights only... again I am paid an hourly rate for.

I wont say what I get paid.., because their might be snoops on here I negotiated an hourly rate when I went back, rather than a salary,.

wow u guys are on good wages im a SVN and only gettin abt 12.000 per year! but my work are tight asses! i dont live in scotland i live in the south but thought id let u no that ur wages aint that crap.

i dont have a qualification as an ana. im known as a patient care assistant and i work at the queen mother hospital at the royal vet college. just over 3 weeks and i finish working there.
