Client says is becoming a real problem as she has to leave the park with her dog coz the males are humping him! and he hates it!

Re: Attractive male dog?

I don't even think it's a neutered/unneutered thing, my castrated lab still tries to hump things and also gets humped himself. One of my friends has a bull mastiff that's castrated and all dogs try to hump him whether their entire or not... looks like it might be more in the pheromone/smell aspect??

Or he's just gay

Re: Attractive male dog?

In my personal experience I've always been under the impression that behaviour like this is the result of a. dominance and b. a bit of confusion.

Whilst I don't know for sure, I for one am not sure whether a dog's natural pheromones change once he's had the snip (or rather, once he's no longer pumped with testosterone). If a dog doesn't smell entirely 'male' it's possible that other males (especially intact or particular dominant ones) catch a whiff and think 'so.. uh... are you a chick or a dude?'. I used to walk with our Gordon's breeder on a regular basis and her patriarch, whilst castrated was very much 'alpha male' and as such was threatened by our Springer before he was castrated in the sense that there was a lot of 'I'm the man around here' scuffling brewing. However, within weeks of having the spingle-spangle snipped, the Gordon completely ignored him. That said, Merlin (SS) has been mounted on the odd occasion only for the other to take a sniff and run away as though screaming 'holy hell, you're a bloke!' after Merlin's flung himself on the floor (submits to everything, bless him) with his belly in the air.

Re: Attractive male dog?

Could it be a dominace thing with the other dogs? And not actually linked to hormones? Just a thought? x

Re: Attractive male dog?

He's 3yr 5mths, was neutered at about 8 months, both testes descended. anal glands were full yesterday so emptied but no blood or pus seen

Re: Attractive male dog?

Sometimes it can be an effect of earlyish neutering too.
