If so, what do you discuss without stepping on the toes of the VS's?
A RVN use to run them at my Sx apparently (before I started) and one of the partners mentioned he liked it when she did them.

Re: Diabetic Nurse Clinics
Intervet-Schering Plough will you give you a training course & support materials to run clinics, I used it at my last place. The rep (well mine anyway) was very supportive too.
I will try that!

Re: Diabetic Nurse Clinics
I am just redoing our protocol - I will try to upload it once I have done
That would be great thanks

Re: Diabetic Nurse Clinics

Thanks everyone for your replies.

So : injection technique, storage, diet, collecting urine and blood samples, weight checks.

Will try and get some stuff from the reps and see where we go form there.

I thought adjusting insulin doses would be an act of veterinary surgery!!

Re: Diabetic Nurse Clinics

Agree on the above 2 posts, initial thing is to spend a decent length of time with the owners, teaching injection techniques and how toi feed and store the insulin

I would be VERY careful about doing and admitting having the freedom to change insulin doses as that is technically prescribing a POM-V medicine!!!

Re: Diabetic Nurse Clinics

Intervet-Schering Plough will you give you a training course & support materials to run clinics, I used it at my last place. When a new patient is diagnosed the vs books a 30min appt with me to discuss everything. Insuvet and canisulin do great goodies for owners of new DM animals. On new patients i do blood glucose curves every 7-10days and adjust the insulin dose accordingly. I request regular urine samples esp when they are just getting stable and once they appear more stable i go between doing a sample at 9am and 5pm and fructosamine levels. Im starting to get 1 or 2 owners to try glucose curves at home to see how they get on. I have complete freedom in the treatment of these patients from diet to insulin dosing. Owners reluctant to come in regularly or financially comprimised can buy urine glucose sticks and test at home and phone Vn with results, its not totally accurate but any glucose i urine generally means a blood glucose above 12mmol/l.

I reccomend chappie for diet if they can afford presciption diets.

Good luck in your clinic!

Re: Diabetic Nurse Clinics

We just run back over things like hypoglycaemia and what to do, storage and handling of the insulin, things to look out for and get them to put together a diary.

The most important thing we cover in ours is injection technique - we find it is a sticking point (no pun intended) for most of our owners. We teach them how to draw up sterile water, ensure they are drawing it up accurately, and get them to inject a cuddly toy showing the correct technique. We then clip a patch on the animals scruff to make it easier for the client to see what they are doing and get them to give a small amount of sterile water and show them the injection as not as bad as they think!

I am just redoing our protocol - I will try to upload it once I have done
