At the weekend we had a stray cat brought in to us as people had seen that it didnt look right. They went knocking on doors before phoning us

Re: RSPCA

Yup

Re: RSPCA

[quote user="Caro Laithwaite"]

They are usually returned with a paper collar with the ACO/Clinic no on asking the owner to call. We tended to find that 99 % would go straight home and the owner would ring and we would explain that was brought in as suspected stray. British people have just as much of a habit of "abducting" cats they think are ill that are fine as they have of picking up healthy wildlife...it was very frustrating. I can't comment too much on this situation but just thought would give you an insight into what we used to do with healthy cats. As I said at the beginning thought we would have been unlikely to do this with a cat with diarrhoea

Re: RSPCA

At the practice I work at we seem to have a much better relationship with the CPL. If they intend on sending something over to us, then we will be called by an area co-ordinator or similar to let us know, or to book an appropriate time if it isn't an emergency - makes life a LOT easier. We find that RSPCA cases will just turn up without any notification, or people will call saying 'we were given your number by the RSPCA' even though our practice is only about 20mins away from a large RSPCA hospital, who have the same opening hours as we do!!!

In the practice I used to work in it was a branch, so the vet was only there for appointments and would then travel to the main surgery whilst a member of staff remained on the premises for reception duties. We used to have sooo many people sent to us by the RSPCA, even though we told them many times we didn't always have a vet there during the day!

Re: RSPCA

I have to say in general our local RSPCA are excellent - we are their main vets so have a good working relationship with the local inspectors/RSPCA kennels and their administrator.

They spend a lot of money on strays and sign overs - inc felv/fiv testing, full vacc course, worming ,flea tx, neutering and any medical tx they need - as long as the animal has a chance of being rehomed they will do it!

I think having a long term relationship with them really helps as we understand how they work and they trust us not to waste their precious cash!!

Better than my local small CP branch - where I rehomed a cat - he was not felv/fiv tested or vacc! When I asked why, they said he was not at risk? Despite being an 8yr old male stray cat!!

Re: RSPCA

That's so true. They have no veterinary knowledge. In fact they struggle to cope with the basics.
They should have rung a vet and asked for advice and even then l bet a lot of receptionists would have not told them to try and get the cheese out. Upon exam is was obvious it was beacause it was an entire tom cat really fit and well. The inspector wouldnt take the cat back and after2 days because no body had come forth and they had no room they insisted we put it to sleep.

This caused an uproar and our practice eventually castrated it and found it a home . They call them a charity but they just make me laugh.

im not for stray cats really but what would the harm be in castrating it and releasing it back where it was found- for all we know it could have had a home already
