I have a fantastic student. We are both trialling for a selected college. Had a play around with the computer program too and it will save so much time on paperwork.

Bit like you (bar the pregnancy) ended up with work related stress years ago, signed off for 1 week (refused the 2nd week my doc wanted me off) Have an issue I can't chill out, always working, thinking about work.....take work home. Maybe i misunderstood but i didn't get the impression it would be anymore work than assessing and definately looked like less paperwork. They did go through a very jargoned edu-speak way of doing a tutorial though - which i decided there and then i would have to improvise with!! Our Centre gave us a template for tutorials which they say they would like us to use and that we need to keep copies of.

We were told to still get 3 hours tutorials in and for the student to document the time - but i thought it was the same as before whereby it didn't actually mean one to one 3 hours but could include any time that someone in the practice went through something with you. As i understood it (but it was a long presentation and i might have missed a bit!) another "competent person" could demonstrate a task but you as clinical coach had to be sure they were competent before entering it on the NPL?

The clinical coach sort of starts off the NPL by demonstrating something and entering that it had been demonstrated (i think) and the student logged how many times they had done it etc and a decision was made as to when the student was ready for assessment and the CC assessed them and then signed it off. Thought it looked really good to be honest. I'm sure there will be teething troubles and i think i need to log on and play around with it to get it right! I saw this as a chance to actually spend time training students rather than spending most of the time going through their written work.

Poor Bengalcat - i've been in a similar situation - don't think everyone fully appreciates how much work assessing is. I became quite ill at one point with it all, just before i became pregnant - maternity leave came as a very welcome break but i still worried about the students i had left back in practice. Try not to let it take over your life.

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....

OMG, I think I wanna cry, more work for me I can't be dealing with! Still got students desp doing portfolio (3 NVQ2 and 2 NVQ3) so am disappearing under their bits. Although mybe the staff at their own clinic will take more responcibilty for their own nurses now ;) Everyone's been asking me to assess cases lately as their assessor vets are too busy, so I've done loads of caselogs this week, pulled extra unpaid hours, travelled to these students just to fill in more paperwork! I have enough work at my own clinic without having to go to other clinics to teach people things, then go back to assess them doing it!

I have my clinical coaching training thing soon, "should take a couple of hours...." Hope so as I'm acutally on holiday, but on my 1st day back my degree student comes back!

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....
She's new at our practice (she seems great) but in the 2, 3 weeks she's been here, we've only had ops finished once before she's left for the day.

I'm really worried I'm not going to get sufficient support.
I have just trained as a Clinical coach and I was told that we still have to do 3 hrs of tutorials with each student! Plus you have to have time to train to do each task and Assess the student can do it. It sounds like less work for the students and more work for the Clinical coach. Our VNAC also said that we have to record everything on paper (just in case the RCVS ask for it!!!!!)

I really hope that you get the time PHA86.
The other thing that has really peed me off is that a couple of months ago, my boss and myself attended a talk about the new diploma. We were just about to fill out all the paperwork to become a TP, but in the talk they said that you no longer had to be a TP in order to train. Any practice that didn't meet all the criteria, (we had only just reached the x-ray caseload) could be classed as an Auxillary TP so we thought fab that makes life a lot easier.

Today we had a phone call saying that we had enrolled a student, (myself) on the course, but we weren't a TP!! Aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh. Now my boss is frantically having to fill in the application form, and got to get someone to come and approve the practice before I'm due to start on the 7th of Sept.

I don't know if anyone else is in the same position, but I'm annoyed as this wasn't made clear at all in the talk we attended. Also I sent my enrolment form off about 5 months ago after we contacted the RCVS stating we weren't a TP, they told us to enrol anyway and nobody from the RCVS, or the CAW has contacted us to check whether we had applied for TP status since.

I know there are always teething problems at first, but to me it seems like some of the most important factors have been overlooked in favour of making the course look more appealing. I just hope they let me start in September.

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....

have the same prob at our place, new trainee been with us 4 months, clinical coach asigned to her works one day a week, is this enough, she also doesnt seem that intereested in the teaching either, i seem to do more with her as me and trainee are only full time ones there!!!!! will this cause her probs???

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....

My clinical coach is either one of the vets, who doesnt get time to fart nevermind help me or a QVN who works a day and a half a week.............wish me luck!!
was it just paperwork u had to fill in, did u have to do any training to be a clinical coach? do u still have to have been qualified for a year? how much did it cost?

I had to spend about 1 hour with I.V and write out some statements, etc... It did not cost the practice anything, as this student comes to us for block periods and is not employed by us.

We do have 4 other students are various stages, so the other A1 here will have to go on a day C.P.D to Sparsholt I think. Hoping to send another R.V.N with her, so to spread out the workload. She will have to start from scratch, as she is not an A1. Will kepp you updated.

Ps The 1 year R.V.N rule still stands that I am aware of.

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....

was it just paperwork u had to fill in, did u have to do any training to be a clinical coach? do u still have to have been qualified for a year? how much did it cost?

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....

Thank you for the info guys it's been very helpful

I have only recently been to our meeting regarding all the changes and I too agree it will be much less paperwork.

Bouncyfi - I enquired regaring the one clinical coach per student too and asked about the point you have brought up as students sometimes need to go to other clinics for areas we arent busy enough for and I was advised that someone at the other clinic can report to the clinical coach acting like a witness, and then as a clinical coach you can sign them off according to the witness and obviously how you feel about the student.

I think time will tell ...............

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....

I don't like the idea that there's only one coach per student - the coach has to show every single task to the student & it can't be spread out over other members of the practice. I think that it quite restrictive. There is also some debate about whether you can change clinical coaches, which I think is silly. We take students from Telford College and they could have coaches from their placement at Glasgow Vet School and then I'll be a coach and then also one of the lecturers at college but there is no leaway in the current system, leaving the students a but stuck

Hope this will change otherwise it looks good!.

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....

This sounds really good! I'm possibly going to be a coach next year if we are able to get a student so this was very interesting to see how it all works. Good luck with the trials!!

Re: I am officially a clinical coach trainer....

Hi Bizzy,

Not sure about the K & U yet?

Only 1 clinical coach per student, but other staff members can oversee the educational process, ie practicals and theory.

I have to log on and state I have shown my student how to complete a task. She then has time (not time restrictions) to practice. Once she has demonstrated it back to me, I log on to state this fact. She then has to log on and provide evidence via computerised diary, etc...

I can only sign her off once I feel she is competence in the task set. Once she is signed off, she can be called upon at any time to be 'assessed' by her I.V.

N.P.L system is so much easier to understand and complete. We have finished 1 section already, (as my student has transferred skills from NVQ 2 portfolio). Emphasis is on witnessing practical skills, but they do have to back this up with K & U to progress to further units.

It's early days but it's a thumb up from me so far! I still have 3 other students completing their NVQ portfolios though so I can't escape it completely yet........
