Pick and choose your course provider, We at AVVT are offering the transitional over a year, so you will finish as normal next summer. You can change your course provider at any point if you want to. Some will be doing 2 years, some 18 months and some a normal academic year. Depends on what will suit you.

The Transitional year, will be fine, it will flow well and should work quite nicely, it will just be the getting used to the NPL that may take a little time, but that is the same for any new thing. Overall I think the new Diploma is a nicer more practically focused course.

[/quote]

Broodmare is right, course providers have been given the power to deliver the course as they see fit, with some basic guidelines. They can deliver it over what time period best suits. CAW are also proposing to deliver the transition couse in one academic year.

The NPL will be a breath of fresh air for most TPs and SVN's but approx 10 specific patient cases will still need writing up in the form of detailed reflective assignments as part of this, and full time/day release courses for the new diploma. Therefore, some "homework" is definately required. The good news is that the transition course does not require equine delivery as you will sit a specific exam paper tailor made transition students.

Re: NVQ - Diploma lvl 3

I have yet to see a syllabus or find out how its running at our VNAC. Recent correspondence said they would tell us soon and the IV is visiting this week so may find out more then. I'll reserve judgement on whether it will fit in a year til then!!

Re: NVQ - Diploma lvl 3

In the transitional award and SA pathway of the Diploma, it is only putting on a head collar and picking a foot up that is required practically and in the theory part it is copmparative anatomy, so would include dog, cat & exotic as well as equine.

I think it is a good idea to check with other course providers regarding their fees etc if your practice only uses one course provider, you may be surprised!

The transitional award fits very nicely into a year, you just need to look closely at the syllabus! The full Diploma fits well into 2 years, again you just need to look at resources and the content of the syllabus. Personally I would rather step on a bit for 2 years than dilly dally about for 3 before I qualify! 2 years before an external exam is a long time!

I can't choose. It's practice's call. They stick with my current one because of fees. I do agree though that the new diploma will be better as it will be more practical focused. But us stuck in the middle will be disadvantaged.
i may be wrong, but as i understand it those of us on nvq2 who move to the new diploma don't need to do equine because it is in the 2nd year of the diploma that you specialise in either small animal or equine? i might have misunderstood it though.

Re: NVQ - Diploma lvl 3

I can't choose. My college aren't even sure how they'll be teaching us lot yet but there's talk of an extra 15 months instead of 12 of regular teaching or regular college work supplemented by distance learning.

Also, is anybody else miffed at the fact that those doing a small animal pathway still have to learn equine basics? It makes absolutely no sense and will just fill my head with more crap that i don't need and won't remember. I've barely stroked a horses nose before. If i wanted to be involved with horses i would've gone the other way.

Another thing i've been told by the CAW (our VNAC) is that if the course runs for 15 months there won't be any earlier exams for us lot, we'll have to wait until the summer (2 yrs from now) at the end of our course. That sucks too. This means it's taking us longer to qualify, earn less money and prevent some of us from moving on earlier. Grrr...

The RCVS are a load of utter crap. I'm really losing my patience for all of this. There's such a lack of understanding from those who aren't currently going through training or transitioning.
