Sorry, forgot to update! .. Saw the GP in August, said took some blood and I had the results back in about 3 days. Confirmed I am anaemic.. So, I got iron tab to take. It's because I loose heavily every month, so she has prescribed me some tablets to take during my period to slow it down, Seems to help.. I'm also taking my iron when I'm feeling run down as susposed to everyday! not feeling as tired now :) Thanks for asking xx

Good excuse to eat some dark chocolate too..:) The 70% proof type: it has lots of iron....

Healthspan do good vit/mins supplements online which are better than high street chemist stuff...

Hiya yeah not bad thanks..

Saw my GP on monday actually, she said it's prob due to my heavy periods that I'm anaemic.. but she also mentioned my PCOS and said she's going to run a load of tests.. had about 15mls of blood taken and poured into about 6 tubes.. so being tested for diabeties, thyroid probs, iron levels the lot! will get the results a week today.. I'm still constantly tired all the time. feel like I can sleep for a week! so hope it jsut comes back as iron levels low due to my periods will keep you posted xxx

wow- holy crap again dinkyd! glad you're now in remission!

my doc said on average hgb should be 9-12 depending on age etc etc. mine came back as 7.2 but i felt like crap with this. it was all due to my endometriosis ( see a prev thread). i ended up having to have blood transfusion so get yourself in there and don't let the reception staff put you off.

I agree with DinkyD and would always go to the Dr if l failed my blood donation (l did when l failed it) but in the mean time till you get to Dr nothing wrong with taking some ironey ferrous vitmany c type things

Absolutely!Just celebrated 6 yrs remission at the start of june .Honestly you are probably fine!But dont want you to think it isnt nothing as it may just not be as straight for ward as taking some tablets- it is for some but not all!

Yes i did....but didnt go to get my blood checked-I went in for my smear test and the nurse thought i looked a bit pale after having my smear done - I thought no bloody wonder lol sticking bits up there lol!I told her i felt fine - which i did!But she took blood anyway and said it may just be my iron levels were a bit low.

I got a phone call on my mobile 7pm that night - i was on call to add to it all- asking if i could go up to the hospital asap as my blood counts were abnormal.Yes I was anaemic but only mildy so and my levels were sitting around about the 10 mark.I was then sent to another hospital- i still had no idea what was going on!Was admitted to the ward and they contacted my mum and then the doc had a serious chat.He told me they suspected i had leukaemia and this was confirmed the next day on my 21st birthday.

Now I honestly felt fine.I was working stupid shifts was just 6months after i qualified so just put my tiredness down to working silly hours!Stupidly ignored my mum for months!If that nurse hadnt even taken my blood - she very easily could have sent me on way - i really dread to think what would have happened.

I dont want to scare you - not my intention at all but just want to put the point across that you really dont want to ignore being anaemic without getting checked first!

our gp's are pretty good - if you can get thru on the phone before 9.30am then you have an appt on the day, if not, then they will arrange a triage doctor phone call on the day.

I will Mum!! lol. seriously, I intend to.. fed up of feeling like i could sleeeeeep for weeks!! I got an appointment next monday (5th) at 5.50pm! couldn't get one any sooner.. Did you get yourself checked out in the end? what did GP find? xx

SharonSP: My gp surgery are ALWAYS fully booked - it's a joke.. they say they can only pre book apt a week or 4wks in advance.. i rang this morning and they had a cancelation for the 5th.. or I'd have to wait til the 19th!!! people can just ring up on the day - but it has to be at 8am and the lines are constantly engaged, then when you do finally get through.. its all booked up!! it's a joke!! xx

i have problems with low iron (ferratin) and take ferrous sulphate- i now just take a maint dose of 1 tab sid but when i was quite bad with it was tid. i always know now because i get that 'can't get out of bed' feeling. you can get it from the chemist over the counter and a maint dose wont do you any harm and is much more effective than iron tablets (something to do with not needing the vit c to absorb)

My dad had to take iron and had tummy probs so took the paediatric iron syrup is a lot easier on the tummy.

Mine wibbles between 9 and 13, has done for years. I take iron and vit c on and off. It causes slight digestive problems for me sadly. (- the iron that is, not the anaemia!!) so i had to see a dietician at the hospital to sort out the food bit.

Agree you need to see doc soon but (to try to be reassuring) a lot of women in your age group are anaemic. They will prob do full blood count. They go by ferritin and Hb, i think, they usually start you off on a high dose of tabs and resample later.

I'm quite concerned that you can't get an appointment for weeks! I thought there were guidelines as to "an appointment within x amount of time"? There would be uproar if this was something really serious and the press found out you couldnt get an appointment for weeks and suffered because of it. I suggest you phone up ./ turn up and insist on being seen, even if you have to sit and wait till the end of surgery times, or see a locum, they cannot just refuse an appointment....this could be serious!!
