I was just wondering as our practice has suddenly become so big we have unfortunately neglected our nurse clinics with being so busy with every thing els. I would really like to start them up again but would like a little insight at how

Re: Nurse Clinics

Hi Viki

If you stock Royal Canin, have a chat with your veterinary business manager, we have tons of support for you when you set up a clinic. We do a full Weigh In Club kit with everything you need to start weight clinics (books for clients, record charts, tape measures etc) . We also have similar booklets for dental clinics and can offer vouchers off Dental and Obesity diets to encourage your clients.

Im currently working on updating our senior support but there is some existing material called Club 8 plus that is still available.

Hope that helps

Ali

Re: Nurse Clinics

Hi Viki,

That sounds like a good starting point. Another good one to add would be offering new puppy and kittens to come in monthly after their second vaccination to have a health check, where you can flea and worm them, talk about feeding, training, and discuss neutering. It's also a good way to bond clients to the practice and hopefully ensure that they will bring their pet in at 6 months to be neutered.

In dental clinics I would give their mouth a check over, see the level of plaque build up or damage. If I think that they may need a dental, i would suggest that they need to have a consultation with a vet so they can provide an estimate. I would also discuss their feeding, hopefully get them on to a dental diet, dental chews, teeth brushing (if possible) or at least some logic gel.

In weigh clinics I would weigh them, do a body conditioning score, and work out their ideal weight. I would discuss feeding, exercise and treats, and suggest they go on a weight reduction diet if overweight. I let the owners know how much food their pet should be having per day, cost per day, how long a bag/ or tray of tins will last them, and how long it should take to reach their goal weight. take before and after pictures and display them in your waiting room!

Are you a Hills practice? They have some good weight record charts you could use. And also they have a website called Craftworks which does all the work for you so you can calculate how much food an animal needs and how much it will cost, etc.

Information packs are always good to give out to clients because I think that they like to go home with something, and also it will help them remember the advice you gave. Just put some leaflets in, a free sample of food (for dentals and weight clinics, although hopefully you can sell them a bag of food too!), and maybe write your own information sheet which goes through what you have said in the clinic.

We don't charge for our nurse clinics, but of course if something is wrong and you need to get a vet to check the animal then we have to charge a consultation.

Hope this helps you a little bit. Hope it makes sense too, it's a bit long winded!

Best of luck

Nicola.
