Hi everyone, it's been a few years since I last helped with a blood transfusion and I've never used Oxyglobin. I know the basics re transfusion medicine and oxyglobin, however any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I've spoken to centaur and they have said a transfusion set is £1.03 +VAT, this seems too cheap to me so any brand names would be most helpful. I'm after the giving set and blood bag with the anti-coag in.

Also does anyone have any preference as to whole blood or Oxyglobin is the best??

Basically the vets I'm working with are more rusty than me and it's for a very poorly cross breed dog which has had gastric bleeding (probably caused by NSAID's used to tx arthritis) and she has a low PCV. She is receiving tx in the form of sucralfate and ranitidine etc... I've not had the full history so I can't give the exact PCV % just yet but there is talk that it will need something along the lines of a transfusion (and the dog belongs to one of the vets too)

Just wanted to get a heads up first, thanks!

[/quote]

you are looking for fenwal bags when you ask your supplier , cant remember the name of our blood admin sets but think the manufacturer was baxter and they were around a couple of pounds each

Re: Blood Transfusion vs. Oxyglobin

If the option was there - i would want a transfusion - oxyglobin is great for buying time eg til your steriods kick in etc - it does not raise the PCV though and this where people get confused - it only increases the haemoglobin to enable the oxygen to be carried around the blood, can do some very scarey and confusing things to bloodwork and also they can appear jaundiced to.Have worked with vets who are stumped because the pcv hasnt increased post transfusion of oxyglobin...these are the ones that dont realise what its use is for though!

PBB are great and can give you support sheets for all their products- def worth getting in touch- though if pennies are an issue it may be an option to collect the blood in house - as have heard it can be pricey.

http://www.petbloodbankuk.org/docs/7_datasheet.pdf info as to which product would be best,

I know dunlops have the CPDA bags and the filter giving sets.

if it is a regenerative anaemia which it poss will be if you suspect gastric bleeding than oxyglobin should be ok however would always use either whole blood or packed cells where possible, we tend to use oxyglobin as a stop gap when we havent got any blood in

always check donor and recipient type, if its a 1st transfusion you can get away with guess work but best to make sure (-ve can go to anyone), check pcv's of both, start transfusion at 0.5ml/kg/hr monitor tpr every 15 mins for 30 mins and then q30mins after that, if no reaction after 1 hr then you can increase to 2ml/kg/hr, the aim is to transfuse over 6 hours max so after 2 hours you can increase to 5ml/kg/hr. drop me a line if you want to know more/can always fax copies of our monitor forms tomorrow if you want!

Re: Blood Transfusion vs. Oxyglobin

we do quite a few blood transfusions here, all with success. need to go careful re doners and blood typing, can order blood which has already been typed from national blood bank, it best practice to give negative blood to an unknown recipient i do believe. however we have done unknown transfusions in the past and the animal been ok, but they have been in emergency situations. infusion concepts provide anticoagulant collection bags and animal care provide admin sets, all of which are available trhough centaur, and not that expensive.

unsure whether i may have dreamnt this but i think oxyglobin been discontinued?......

Most important thing i think is to administer slowly and monitor v v carefully for signs of anaphylaxis
