Sometimes crystals are a lot clearer without stain believe it or not.

Re: Acute renal failure cat

[quote user="SmegSlayer"]

(I dont really use sedistain for crystals - I usually have 2 coverslips on the same slide, one a stained sample for cells etc and the other unstained for crystals) But maybe they werent there anyway? antifreeze was only a suggestion

going completely off topic but how do u see anything without stain? i've tried ur method and can't see anything that i could definately identify

You can see crystals without a stain.

Re: Acute renal failure cat

[quote user="Sal (the 1st) Holesworth VN CMH Chyp (M)PNLP"]

I know its for the best - he had gotten so oedematous that he looked like a puddle of cat - but he was purring as he slipped away and felt very guilty!

I took a quick sneaky cysto of his extremely small bladder before wrapping him up in his blanket to satisfy curiosity re: antifreeze but we don't appear to have any sedistain but regardless can't see the oxylate crystals... hmmm

Guess it'll just go down as one of those cases you wonder about for ages..

The vet also is advocating pts, which i agree may be the best, now if only I could get hold of the owners...

Agree about the urinary catheter Steph but vet doesn't seem inclined (read: motivated) and to be fair we shouldn't even have him hospitalised here as we are strictly Mon - Fri, but wanted to give the guy a bit of a chance, and I'm popping in every few hours to check and smooch him.

I have just checked that bottle of frusemide... and it expired in feb.... (prev nurse was from the school of never-throw-anything-away) so have given another dose and will see how we are in an hour or so as cant get hold of owners now and vet away until this eve anyway.

Will keep you all posted...

Re: Acute renal failure cat

I would normally suggest placing a urinary catheter as this will help monitor the urine output properly.

sounds like the poor cat is very uraemic and if money is a huge problem then it might be fairer to let him go, as most ARF cats will need minimum of a week's hospitalisation on fluids, and only start reducing the rate when the urea and creatinine are within normal limits.

(I did a lecture at BSAVA on the care of ARF patients and am happy to send you my notes if you want?)

Re: Acute renal failure cat

if you can get any urine - exam for crystals/sed may help with diagnosis

Re: Acute renal failure cat

Yeah, that was my first thought...

Re: Acute renal failure cat

antifreeze ?
