IMO it depends on the owner.. the owner HAS to be the alpha male or female - show them who is boss right from the start, this being to avoid aggressive behaviour and listen to commands from the owner.. However I f*cking hate hate hate seeing these hoodie thugs pratting around the street with pitbull type / shar pei / rottie, or whatever 'aggressive' dog they choose, purely to "look hard" .. no wonder people are scared of some breeds when they are brought up with a thug! thats just my opinion anyway!

I personally like shar pei's - only seen about 2 aggressive shar pei's in the 9yrs I've worked in practice.. I've seen more aggressive yorkshire terriers than shar pei's Lol!! saying that though, I still wouldn't own one due to the number of problems they get!

Re: Very Cute Shar Pei

Agree with Kim and others.
i had a shar pei (which i got before i went into nursing) as i got a toy when i was 5 and always wanted one.

sadly about a year ago i had to have him pts due to him having shar pei fever / swollen hock syndrome which is a gene problem, luckily enough he never had any skin problems but yes he did have entropion.

i am not trying to stand up for the breed, he had a lovely temperament at home but with strangers i would not trust him but i knew he had issues and dealt with it by taking him to training lessons and being more aware out and about.

but yes they do have temperamental problems and i would def say they are not dogs for children, sadly they are a fighting dog and the only way to improve things is clients to be more aware and do the research and the breeders to try and change their ways (which i personnaly know is very hard)

Re: Very Cute Shar Pei

I am looking to take "sid" on but depends on our dog.....he is being rehomed as the mastiff they have has just had 12 pups and the owner is 8 months pregnant so they have their hands full!!!!
Sounds like a breeder I used to know

She routinely insisted on a caesarians for ALL her bitches! Boss was old school and used to pander to her! Even to the extent of letting her watch in theatre. Anyone, one day we were doing one of her bitches caesarians. I was on puppy duty and my best mate was on anaesthesia! Breeder was constantly looking over my mates shoulder asking her all sorts of questions about the anaesthestic! Anyone, puppies were delivered and a few other nurses worked away at pups. All were not doing very well. It transpired that the breeder had got her dates muddled up and the pups were delivered too early. We tried desperately to save them. Unfortunately, all pups died very sad. and all breeder had to say was "oh well they aren't very nice colours and there all boys as well"

really dont like them, all the ones i've come across have been evil, plus allergic to them, plus all their health probs they should not be bred at all as far as i'm concerned!!!!
I thought exactly the same as you until recently.

However, we currently have a 6mo shar pei girly on our books, lovely dog, lovely temperament, and crucially, very sensible owner! Pooch has already been spayed pre season, and had a bilateral entropian, and a 'facelift' to ease the discomfort with her eyes.

She seems none the worse for wear for her ops, and is still sweet and waggy when she comes in. She is THE only nice shar pei I have met in 12years though! And I think a lot of that is down to the owner being realistic about the breed problems and costs involved, and ensuring she is well trained and socialised. Yay for sensible owners!
I agree that sensible ownership is the key to the behaviour probs HOWEVER why do they spend so much money on a pure breed which you then know you're going to have to spend a fortune on to correct bred in problems such as the entropians etc!!!!
TBH i'm not sure if this was a bought pup or a rescue. But to put the client into perspective, last year she came in with a geriatric, entire, emaciated, matted up to the eyeballs old man of a cat, that she had come across as a stray while on holiday in wales. She paid a small fortune to get him comfortable, vacc'd, chipped, neutered, and to have a work up on his condition.

Would be nicer though if dogs weren't bred with these problems in the first place.
Very true!

Bulldogs, shar peis, persians - any extremely bred breed REALLY gets my back up!

The only reason they are like that is for human entertainment, if you like! There's no good reason whatsoever!

The KC breed standards have a lot to answer for! I know they have revised them recently to make them slightly less extreme, but that is a change that was long overdue!!
