I have to say it depends on what you are prepared to sacrifice sadly. I left school 1994 after completing my last GCSE exam and walked into a full time trainee position 3 days later, although it sounds idyllic, it was far from it!! I earned £29.50 a week for the next year and then was fobbed off for the next 2 years after enquiring about when I would be sent to college.

To cut a long story short, 10 years later and a shed load of my own money, annual leave and sanity I passed the VN exams.

when I started out I couldnt afford much at all - I lived in practice accom for an awful long time at various practices (which I have to say was often less than ideal) but it gave me the chance to train. I moved around quite a bit for training - same as Nick I was reliant on public transport which was pretty much non existant or very 'challenging' in the area I was working. I think in the first 5 years I maybe made only 3 trips home to see family, but we all wrote a lot of letters (no internet then, no mobiles and couldnt afford a land line). I started my nursing career with an overdraft of £80 - maybe doesnt sound a lot now but it represented a considerable sum to me in 1984 when my weekly wage was £32 with £17 of that being paid back to the practice for my rent on the flat, my first job I shared a flat with 4 other nurses but I have been lucky to have a whole flat to myself a few times. I have had some lousy bosses but equally have met some really good ones.

I found I soon made new friends in whatever area I worked (and I used to be a bit shy and quiet around anybody I didnt know - so if I can do it everybody else should be alright).

Looking at it now the job didnt really sell itself well - but I took a chance and I am still here (tho I do wonder sometimes)

I lived in practice accommodation for 3.5 yrs! Luckily I only had to move 25 miles but might as well been other end of the country as I had no transport and public transport was rubbish. I would of considered moving anywhere to be able to train.... And I then moved 200 miles to complete training.

I think the problem now is with so many colleges now offering full time courses vets are finding it easier not to do 'in service' training ie work and college. As this is more expensive for them.

So the few training places that do come up are few and far between....

I say if you see the opportunity then grab it with both hands.

I had to move 250 miles away to train - although I was working as a nursing asst I was unable to find a TP in this area. Ended up writing to pretty much most of the TPs in England, checked practice websites where jobs were advertised and found them that way. I lived in practice accommodation as I also had debts/car etc to pay for and renting privately wouldn't have been possible unless I made myself in even more debt Have seen a few ads for SVNs in the various press and these have all been advertised with accommodation so very helpful for student salaries.

Hi Iklesal- have you though about practices that offer accomadation - some offer this as part of the job.Then that would take some of the pressure off your finance situation.This very much depends on your situation though- i appreciate that.Good luck though.

Not everybody can afford to move!! Ive been looking for trainee positions in cheshire area for almost 10 years and the reason i havnt been looking further afield is because i have £5000 worth of debt. Yes, my own stupid fault, i was young a didnt really understand the importance of money and how to handle it. I cannot afford to move away from where i live. So yes, if you want something bad enough then you do whatever you can to get it but its not always that easy!! I would be willing to move away from my friends and family but i use about half of my wages to pay off my debt each month, there is no way i can move away from home on £400 a month.

aw sal what a lovely post! It's so true!Everyone has their reasons tho

I have a 2 grand over draft tho, so theres no way i could afford two rents and a deposit for a flat! Basically that the only thing stoipping me! In a crappy job the now making sure I can afford to move soon though! I actually hate Scotland for the lack of Training places! GR!

It's funny how you autmatically assume we all have to work the same hours! We are 9 nurses, (part time and full),4 vets and we work a variety of shifts, starting from 8am upto 7pm (although it maybe 7:30pm soon).

We have employed separate weekend nurses (it has taken years to get there, but finally week day nurses are free of weekend working, yipee!!!!!). We still have to cover for hols/sickness but this is still a miracle in my eyes!

Still, it goes to show that being part of a corporate company still has its individuality in places.

We are open until 7pm but the late nurse finishes at 6.30pm, the receptionist and vet finish at 7pm.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE this job!! Stella will tell you worked in this vet practice in rumney for 9yrs now, and would love nothing more than to train and qualify! .. I have a son who goes to school in newport so the hours I can do has to be around school times (i.e 9.30 - 2.30.. then back in after 4pm!) thats why I've stayed in this current practice for so long as they are flexible with my hours and school hols! Grrrrr why can't my son be old enough to go to school & come himself!!!

aw thanks! I would move for a position like this but well it's too expensive to move and knowing my luck i'd never find anywhere cheap enough to live that wasn't flat sharing!

There's never ever great positions like this in Glasgow or Scotland really! The position i just applied for isn't even a training practice! But experience is experience i guess!

me too - with 4 years experience as unqualified, and 3 months as a trainee before they could no longer afford another student, I'd love the chance again to train.

But at the opposite side of the country it's a bit awkward!

Why aren't there any jobs within 100 miles of me these days? I thought the new rules were meant to make it easier to get places!
