I feel abit silly asking this question, but it would be nice to get some reassurance. I picked up my GSP puppy yesterday. We are having lots of fun already. But she hates the crate. I read up on everything I could beforehand. My other dog

Re: Settling in new puppy

I would just go with what everyone else has said...feed and play in the crate, and leave it open all day so she can go in and out. My vet got a pup last year, and she settled so much better with a heat pad than without, so def worth a go. Now she's quite happy in her (now bigger!) crate at work, and runs and sits in it waiting for her treat before she goes to sleep!

Re: Settling in new puppy

Also, you could put in a hot water bottle or heat pad and a ticking alarm clock. Is an old idea but does work in making them feel more secure.

Good luck

I wouldn't lock her in it to begin with - you don't want to make it feel like a punishment, she should feel safe and secure in there. I'd feed her all her meals in there too and give her toys like a Kong that will keep her occupied when she's in the crate. Sounds like she's a bit of a nervous, clingy pup, so make sure you don't reinforce that behaviour by giving her attention if she's whimpering or seems scared. If you act calm and confident about everything she'll pick up on that and get more confident herself. I'm sure you know all this already, sorry I can't be of more help!

Good luck with her and have fun!

Re: Settling in new puppy

from what i've found with puppies its just down to repeatitions... don't play down to her or give in on a whim one night and let her out - on the couch, in the bed etc etc.

DAPs are good, what about Zylkene tablets, they worked really well with my cats settling into their new house - although I don't know if there's an age restriction on them?!

Can both of your dogs go in the crate together? Maybe if she sees the other dog settling down she might do the same?

I'm sure you've probably gone down these roads, sorry if it's nothing new...♥
