I am currently nursing a blue tit fledgling and am wondering if any one can give me any tips on how to introduce solid food and just any general advice.
Thanks in advance,

PLEASE DONT FEED A/D BIRDS WILL GET HEPATIC LIPIDOSIS AND OR RICKETS DUE TO VITAMIN B & D3 DEGICIENCY!!

You should feed KAYTEE "EXACT" food. It is similar to cimicat in that you have to mix it with water. This can be fed until the bird is totally weaned.

I believe that Countrywide sell this food. Its always better to keep the bird slightly hungry rather than over feed it. To wean, keep them slightly more hungry and show them the food. increase the feeding frequency from every hour to once every 2 hours do this gradually over SEVERAL DAYS. Try and avoid night feeds as the birds are less likeley to feed at night in their natural environment. dawn and dusk for predatory birds eg kestrel, owl, buzzard. Use common sense and dont expect the bird to completely feed itself, KEEP A CLOSE WATCH AND FEED IT IF NECESSARY!

I hope this helps!

If they are fledgelings we now get the people that brought them in to wait, check them over and if they are deemed to be healthy, return them to where they picked them up! It is only in exceptional circumstances we will keep them, and then they come home with me!

With no sign of the lovely TLC yet (who is my little font of wildlife knowledge) I will put a few bits but will be happily told different, I have only been doing this a couple of years so am still learning myself!

The best thing you can do is try to keep the environment interesting and so he can practice the things he will need - flight, balance etc. Will stick some pictures of J.J.'s house up, but yours can be simpler! Make sure they are keen to hunt for their prey items when the time comes - get mealworms, worms and similar to get the thrush to eat them - a few practice snails would go down a treat too! Also minimise contact - I have had one rearing completely fail this year due to it becoming too bonded and had to pass it to Vale Wildlife to soft release with other birds of his species. I am a bit worried J.J. is going the same way!

For release, personally if I have hand reared them I release them somewhere I can watch them if needs be for around 2 hours - to ensure they move on and don't just stick to you. Also, probably somewhere you know there are other thrushes - if they can survive he can!

Good luck!

Re: Blue Tit Fledgling

I am hand rearing a baby thrush at the moment!!

We seem to be having a influx of wild baby birds at the moment who have fallen out of their nests and the members of the public believe it necessary to pick them up and bring them to us.

We have had 'Itch' for 2 weeks now and he is doing really well.

The little baby thrush I have, my son has named Charlie. He is approx 3 weeks old and I am syringe feeding him a/d. He wont eat by himself so I am feediing him every hour or so during the day then feed him last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

Any tips to make life good for him? And any ideas on what to do with him when he is ready to be released?!!

Re: Blue Tit Fledgling

Wow!! Well done! I can imagine the amount of work that goes into rearing these babies, and I have to say I don't think I could hack it, so hats off to you guys!

Re: Blue Tit Fledgling

Wow!
I think the corvids are generally weaned by the parents quite late, J.J. won't eat anything himself yet - will even spit it out if I don't put it far enough into his beak!

I think the plan is mealworms and other wiggly more live food to try and get them used to it, thats what I am trying. Will be watching for other hints though!
