I am a regular poster on here, but I don't want to give away which practice I work for, hence the anon account.
Today a vet put a cast on a dogs leg. Initial covering of soffban, with padding between toes was done by the nurse (not me).
The vet in question made a point of having a few minutes alone, and saying he was upset we came to blows - I respect him for that, but he also slipped in that he was not willing to renege on the clinical aspects either..

I didn't say anything back to him - just smiled and had a make up momrnt!

As I said before, I LOVE the guy to bits as a colleague, but I cannot stand by and see something done, that may have a detrimental affect on an an animal, and say nothing!

Anyway, I spoke to a partner, and in not so many words (practice politics!) he backed me up. His face told all at the mention of a cast without the paw and distal joint included spoke volumes! He is glad I booked a check for Sat, and will 'review the case next week'

Thankyou everyone for your support - it has been a trying couple of days at work - so happy to know I have the back up of fellow nurses

Re: Question...

SVN, i echo what others have said - you did what i hope i'd be strong enough to do. I hope the poor dog is ok. I agree with Emma, tell your boss before the vet does, just so they know from your side. My for the dog.

Re: Question...

Definately get in with the partners first - that way they can see you genuinely care and were doing this for the benefit of the patient. If they vet gets in - however nice they may seem - they may have seen your concern differently.

You really have done nothing wrong.

I am so glad it is getting some use. I may have a couple of others to add to be honest, I think I did a drain care leaflet a little while ago...

Re: Question...

Thankyou guys - and Emma your bandage care leaflet is ACE! Thankyou for uploading - I try and use it whenever we have a bandaged critter to discharge

I think what upset me most, as well as the whole confrontation thing, was the fact he said (He is a NZ locum) 'Because I don't know UK practice that well, I'll let this one go'

His tone of voice was as if I had done wrong, or spoke out of turn! Yes things got heated, and yes I told him I would not discharge the dog with the dressing in that state but what!? It was as if he thought I should be reported to the partners!! He's usually so nice too!

For what its worth, I'm planning on mentioning it to a partner tomorrow to fill them in, just in case anything does come of it. HN said she will have a quiet word in Saturday vets ear to check the wetness situation, so hopefully pooch will be OK!

Re: Question...

Was it Dynacast you used by any chance.

Anyway, Where I used to work we used to use it a fair bit. Was usually the vets who placed these dressings as the cast has to be accurately placed in the right position on the limb requiring casting.

Anyway, all you can do is, like others have said, is flag things up to not only the people involed (ie the vet) and your line manager (ie HN).

Good for warning the owners and giving them a handout. And hope things are ok on sat.

Casts can cause serious probs if they are not padded adequately causing serious damage to the patient.

I have seen a dog nearly loose it's leg due to an ill fitting badage. Had all but one digit removed in the end

Re: Question...

For a start - yay at people finding my bandage care leaflet useful!

Secondly, I think you did the right thing. You can do no more than flag these things up to the vet and hope they listen to you. If they don't, you have done your best and hopefully, when the vet settles down, they will realise that you had a valid point if nothing else.

I hope the dog is ok - please let us know.

Re: Question...

Vets are sooooo rubbish at bandages!
