I am a V.N. and already know how to microchip – how can I get an Implanter Code?

Please ask your vet to write a short fax stating you are competent to microchip companion animals and fax it to us – 0207 586 0080. We will call the vet for verification and then when you place your first order we will issue an Implanter Code to you. You can always come on the training course - every VN learns a lot more than in the surgery :)

What you can do is this.......if you not in practice you will need a letter from a vet to say you are competent to microchip companion animals.....fax this through to Pet Detect....see above link.......who will then issue you with an implanter code........I shall send this info over to the BVNA so the correct info is given out in future!!!

So you dont need to attend a course as long as you have a vet letter......

Just spoke to RCVS and got this off their website.........

ADVICE NOTE 6
MICROCHIPPING
1) RCVS Council last approved guidelines on microchipping in February 2000 (RCVS News,
March 2000). Following a review of these guidelines by the Veterinary Surgery Working
Party, the following guidelines have now been agreed.
a) implantation by methods other than the subcutaneous route, ear tag or bolus will
generally amount to veterinary surgery in view of the potential for pain or stress or for
spreading disease, and in some cases the likely handling difficulties;
b) the repair or closure of the entry site, where necessary, will generally amount to
veterinary surgery;
c) sedation and analgesia are medical treatment and so amount to veterinary surgery.
Depending upon the nature of the treatment which is necessary it may be lawful for it
to be carried out by a suitably qualified veterinary nurse under veterinary direction or
by the owner;
d) the procedure may amount to veterinary surgery if there is special risk to the health
or welfare of the animal.
2) The new advice strengthens the existing advice and makes clear that the RCVS considers
the microchipping of horses within the nuchal ligament an act of veterinary surgery.

I knew there must be a way, because the nurse that set up her own clinic in North London (triage pets) is allowed to do it- but it was noted that she struggled to get authorisation, in one of the articles on her.

You can do all those things as long a a vet on premises but you cant go off an do it on your own!! Whats the point of being an RVN!!!!!!
