If this something you have noticed and if so what are the key worries about the trend?

There is an increase in malamute type dogs in London, and it grows a little every year. I would say most people in the areas I have worked have "husky types" but they are too large to be huskies and appear to be malamute/akita crosses., therefore putting them in the status dog category!

I agree with the OP that these people usually have little idea of the work involved and the dogs can be a handful. I have seen several malamute type "huskies" being used for security too, sad.

Re: Huskies

yeh he didnt let go of the dog... he punched the bloke back..n then ran off!!! couldnt believe it!
Its because they look like wolves, so stupid people think they look 'cool' with them

Ive would definately say ive seen an increase in them, we still dont see loads but its more than before when they were very rare, and not just in practice, walking in the park and street etc you see alot more than you used to.

A husky in the hands of an idiot who has no idea how much time and effort and energy you need to put in to these beautiful dogs is a very dangerous creature. Its a shame as i love them but ive seen so many in the wrong hands who are agressive and their owners cant control them

[/quote]

I agree. I got my youngest husky because some idiot didn't realise the effort needed to keep her. Her previous owners were willing to put her to sleep at 9 months old! they made out that she was aggressive and they had to constantly keep a muzzle on her. i took her home (where i realised she wasn't even house trained!) and she has never had a muzzle on since because she is a lovely natured dog that just needed training and discipline.

they are such strong willed dogs that they need lots of training and an owner who knows what they are doing. they need to be kept in check from being a puppy because once they think they can get away with something, they will try their best to do it!

From what I've seen people get huskies because of the way they look so normally they end up with people who don't have a clue how much hard work they are. I think it's because of this as to why they are popular, not because they are seen as a status dog.

I agree with what you have said, I've only been working in practice for 4 years but have seen an increase in these dogs, but so many people are unaware of the hard work that goes into them, I usually ask at 2nd vacs if they have had the breed before and if not are they aware on how much training and exercise they need to do!

Re: Huskies

Its because they look like wolves, so stupid people think they look 'cool' with them

The racing sport sounds great fun they have such good weekends away camping at competions I would love to go but they are restricted to the husky breed (and possibly some classes for malamutes) and very limited open classes.. as they don't want the sport to become open to all breeds (that is what I gather, not 100% sure if that is the case)

So I wonder if the popularity for the breed is so they can enter these competions which maybe not such a bad thing, but I can't see why else they would be status dogs, from my experience they need a hell of a lot of exercise and mental stimulation and unless they are very well trained it is it is unsafe to let them off the lead cus they just run. They are certainly a breed meant for very commited, patient owners who are willing to do lots with them. But then I spose you could say that about lots of other breeds!

Re: Huskies

Gosh, thats shocking- hope he was ok.
