I would recommend the above re the desensitisation try and encourage the crate as a positive place so when you go to bed give her a treat eg a stuffed kong (try stuffing it and putting in the freezer hours of fun!!!!) so you can then crate her when you go out as well as at night

Re: Crying Dog - advice needed!!

This morning i left her at my mam's as i went to work and within 10 minutes of me leaving i got a text saying that the dog had messed on the floor! I was lucky enough at the time to work with a vet behaviourist who reccomended the following things;

*Get up, put your coat on, get your keys and bag, walk to the door.... and then come back and sit down! Repeat millions of times to desensitise them to the whole routine!

*Do the above, go out, and come back in a few secs later. Gradually (very gradually) increase the time, until it becomes a non event for the pooch

*Use a kong or similar, but make it an 'exciting thing' that is only available to pooch when you are not there - ONLY when pooch is on their own!

*Completely ignore pooch when you come home, turn your back on them, do not make eye contact UNTIL pooch is settled and resting - THEN make fuss of them!

I am in no way what soever clued up on behavior, but this advice helped with pooch! And the behaviourist in question has spent a lot of time working with Sarah Heath

Re: Crying Dog - advice needed!!

How would you teach them its ok to be alone?

Re: Crying Dog - advice needed!!

i taught my dogs that it was ok to be alone by getting ready to go out leave for a short time then return gradually increasing the time . i definetly do ot recommened hitting or shouting in any circumstance.

Re: Crying Dog - advice needed!!

I would increase exercise, start DAP, and treat as a seperation anxiety problem - try to alter your routine so she wont know how long you will be out for. If you need to be out for long periods try to get a dog walker to break up the time.

Re: Crying Dog - advice needed!!

I'll give the walks a go first, she loves her wee cage haha! Have you tried giving her neutroceuticals such as Zylkene, or scullcap and valerian combined with DAP in her cage, and giving her things to do when she is left in there, such as a stuffed kong.

Do you use her crate as a punishment aswell, as if you do it is not going to make her enjoy being in there as it is a confused message. I agree with the long walks too!

Re: Crying Dog - advice needed!!

Have you tried exercising her till she can hardly walk? She will just want to sleep when she is at home! It worked for my neighbours 2 dogs - which is just as well cos I was considering slipping some ACP through the letterbox!
