I'm sorry just dont see the need for a private section but I respect your opinion - seems a bit elitist to me. Correct me if I am wrong but what you are suggesting could be done as a private conversation with like minded people without creating multiple tiers within a site.

Have seen private sections on other forums and have seen the trouble they can cause where somebody feels they are better than somebody else just because they have access to a private section and somebody else doesnt. It can get very messy and unpleasant and can result in a 'queen bee' character who gathers all their little supporters around them and then dominates the whole forum stifling any opinion that doesnt fall in with theirs. The private section can then become an area for people to moan about other people behind their backs who are not privy to the section and it just gets very nasty ( I dont participate in any private areas now because of this - and it has happened in every single group where private areas have been allowed in groups I have been a member of - groups which are comprised of 'professional' members I might add)

I would hate for that to happen here I think it is important to discuss things in the open rather than driving them underground - but it is also important to discuss them in a way that is constructive and it doesnt just turn into a moaning session or a whole list of horror stories.

Totally respect your opinion even if I cant agree with it and hope this explains my stance a bit better

Re: vets who lose it
It is possible to have your own little private groups anyway where people are invited into a group conversation - its already been done. That way subjects can be discussed without becoming public on the forum.

Again I dont condone the behaviour under discussion and I dont think it should be covered up. I just think that people need to be careful about what they are saying and how it may be viewed by people outside the veterinary world especially if it identifies a practice - it then isnt just the offender that is indentified but all those they work with.

Re: vets who lose it
I am opposed to the idea of creating

I totally understand that it can be hard to raise your head above the parapet when your job could be on the line over it or you find it hard to speak up, but I feel that in that situation my (or 'yours' or 'anyones') first and main reponsibility is not loyalty to the vet, protection of the practice, or even protection of the self, ie my/your job, but protection of the animal.

I could not stand by and watch a member of the public abuse an animal in any way, and have waded in when I have seen cruelty by the public more than once before, and violence or assault of an animal by a vet. nurse or other person entrusted with the care of an animal is 100% worse.

We are supposed to be their protectors, their voices, their carers and their defenders, and not only have we chosen to pursue a career doing just that but we are, in this capacity, paid to do that (among the million other things we do!)

I wonder though if anyone can advise logistically what a person witnessing abuse of that kind can do though?

I work for a large company so the course to follow would be clear.

What if ther person comitting the offence is your boss and there is no one above them to talk to?

It has been mentioned about contacting the RCVS but what do they/ can they actually do?

Surely with no proof of an assault, and only one complainant (as would often be the case I think, either due to only one person witnessing their behaviour or other people involved not being willing to speak up for fear of reprisal) the RCVS has it's hands tied in terms of what they can actually do, and any investigation or action on their part would likely leave the complainant in a very precarious position with their job?

And also if they did indeed lose their role over speaking up about something of this kind, is it not then even worse that the practice is back to having some wildcard anger monger in charge of animals, unchecked and with no one left there to act on any inappropriate behaviour?

Finally as mentioned, private areas of the forum for known people would, I think, be a sterling idea.

The Veterinary Surgons board has more private forums than non, and rightly so due to the nature of the job and the subjects that come up for discussion.

We as nurses share a lot of the same issues, and if we are indeed professionals working in 'a profession' in it's own right (that of veterinary nursing) as we feel that we are, and are fighting to have acknowledged with the protection of the title etc, should we not have areas free from public eyes to discuss relevant and sensitive issues such as these without people's jobs being risked due to the dual burden of transparency of membership (real names) plus a publicly searchable forum?

It is indeed easy to find this board and read it, non registered members cannot see the board in the wasy that we do, but I spoke to my Father recently to find out that he had googled my name (as you do!) and pages and pages of this very forum came up on google, showing my input on every single thread I have posted on...
Thats EXACTLY what we do with our vet when he gets stressed . lol..
Could Arlo not make a section that you have to regiser to get into and is completely private?

i know on a couple of forums i am with they have a private section, that only certain members can get in to and IS NOT accessible to the public or any search engines.

Then it might help people who are having problems and who dont want to be 'found' etc.
That's a great idea... don't know whether it's possible... you should contact Arlo...... I strongly agree that it is a subject that shouldn't be hidden/ deleted but I also think that we should think very carefully about what is posted on here..... much as I love this site, it's can be a hive of info in the wrong hands

Why? No vets names have been mentioned or practices.

If people aren't able to discuss this, then its the sort of thing that gets swept under the carpet, and becomes taboo like in house bullying.

Unfortunatley it happens, i have worked with a couple of vets who would lose their temper, one walked out mid spay because he was having troubles, his anger was in no way directed at me, it was to him self out of frustration, he was newly qualified and still learning, but for the younger nurses it was scary.

A different vet would lose his temper with animals and throw them around, he would get complained about in appraisals. He once went to hit a dog went it wouldnt sit still for an IV, missed and hit my hand, so i told him bluntly that it was me that he hit and he walked off, he did appologise later. Thing is he was a lovely bloke .. just wasnt patient with himself or animals, couldnt fault him in anyother way.

We knew when he did dentals to stay well clear, in the end it became funny when he began to steam and retractors would fly around, someone would poke their heads in and say..'not going well then'.... which would kind of diffuse the situation.
Because last year we had posts from this site plastered all over another forum!
