i work for a corporate company and if the vets priced up for a nail clip/ express anal glands correctly (as per company policy) they would be £37.96 and £32.43 repectively coz the vets are supposed to charge a consult fee (£24.15) as well as the procedure. We have no nurse clinics so clients have to see the vet. They have yelled and screamed at the regional directors about how bad this is until they are blue in the face and the RD's still think they above pricing is reasonable. The vets have effectively stuck 2 fingers up at head office and just charge the nail clip or expression as long as there are no other problems.

also normal blood tests have the fee for the actual test, and a fee of around a tenner for the sampling. on pre op bloods we waive the sampling fee, as we will be performing venepuncture anyway.

Re: Enucleation

[quote user="SmegSlayer"]

I have worked in a number of practices where the boss although doing an excellent job really doesnt charge what the job is worth - there are various reasons for this ; maybe there is the fear that another practice will undercut on prices, the fear that clients will think the practice too expensive especially if based in a poor economic area, the need to 'steal' clients away from other neighbouring practices or it might just be that the boss is happy with the income, has good client base and isnt in the business to make millions.

I think it is easier for corporates to charge more because when the complaints come in re fees it is possible to say 'not our fault - blame head office'.

If you think about it the corporates should in theory be cheaper than the independant surgeries. They are mostly buying in bulk with huge product discounts small stand alone practices could only dream of, in saying that they can dictate what medications are used and what will be charged for them - it is true they usually have a higher profit margin than independant practices but they can only charge what people are prepared to pay in an area and if they get too greedy clients vote with their feet and find somewhere else

Re: Enucleation

All charges should really be based on costing it first, then adding a reasonable mark-up. (It is pretty easy to cost an op - surgical time, consumables used etc.). I find that makes it easier to look the client in the eye when you ask for your fee - you know it is reasonable.

I am baffled as to why someone would say 'it depends on whether you are a corporate or a private practice.' I honestly can't see why - the overheads are the same so I can only assume the profit margins must be different - but how??

Ours is £147.57 including the anaesthetic. Owners might percevie them to be a big, invasive op but they don't actually take that long, do they? Certainly shorter than a bitch spay, and with similar use of consumables. So unless you're running bitch spays as a loss leader and making up the shortfall with other ops (maybe this is the difference with corporates?) then the cost would be similar.

Re: Enucleation
