In my (humble) experience there are a few common problems:

-worms - amazing how many keepers don't realise that chucks kept on a small area need worming really regularly - we recommend monthly

-ex-bats are only supposed to be alive <2years so although it is great that people give them a lovely retirement, most (but not all, I know) are going to die of egg peritonitis or tumours at a relatively young age. They are egg factories, not genetically designed for a long life.

-inappropriate species choice - people get fluffy 'pretty' species like silkies - whose feathers are completely useless for anything other than looking pretty - and then expect them to live in their garden all year round with no 'maintenance'. It's like expecting a border collie and a papillon to cope with the same thing - show breeds are just a bit softer!!!

I agree with Mrs Mac - Black rocks are great! The sheen on them looks amazing and makes rain just run off the feathers beautifully. Much more practical than warrens - who just look like drowned rats when they get wet!

had never really noticed before the last couple of months how many pet chickens are out there - there seem to be a lot with problems too. Maybe I was lucky with mine but there do seem to be some very sickly specimens out there

Ayway I have a question......, Did anyone know that if you ever have to give your chickens Baytril, you can never eat ther eggs again? A vet from work has just been on a course run by Simon Girling, and he told them this!! I never knew that, and wondered if you guys did. Also as it was a busy day in prep I forgot to ask why you can never eat the eggs again.Anyone any idea why?
