Just looking for some opinions here. I've had lots of problems over the last couple of years (which I probably shouldn't go into online....long story anyway ) and I have had hypnotherapy suggested to me in the past. I then decided to look

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

no problem

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

Hi guys, thank you for all of your comments!

Yes I have been to doctors - unfortunatley he is quite an old doctor and I do feel when I talk to him that my points of concern are never understood! He also told me there was a 2 year waiting list if I wanted therapy/councilling or CBT thro the NHS (...typical may I add). So out of desperation I am seeking any help privatley. I am optomistic with this, and I want to be optomistic!

I did have a visit no so long ago from a psychiatric nurse - and she was amazing help! Just talking to her alone and discussing my issues with her helped soooo much - so I am all for "talking therapy". May I add, just wacking a patient onto anti-depressants like my doctor did...he told me I wont notice the difference until a good few months of taking the tablets. However 5 months on and my side effects were convincing me I was going crazy....seriously crazy to the point I was too scared to admit what was going on in my head as I thought i'd be shipped off to some asylum. Now the doctor never EVER explained that may happen but the psychiatric nurse said it is quite common!!!!!!! It was actually this nurse that advised to look into CBT or other talking therapies.

Sal...I may well give you a PM when I get a chance (thank-you, if you don't mind talking to me!!!)

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

feeling a little sad that quite a few of you have had less than good results I know it isnt for everybody but would have hoped for a few more positive experiences. It still concerns me that some therapists are advocating weekly sessions for prolonged periods - there is such a thing as therapy dependancy. Obviously I cant comment on an individuals duration of therapy and I dont deny that some people need longer than others - but surely not all of you? I dont think that quick fixes are always the answer but I dont believe in stringing things out either.

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

Hi!

I had 1 session of hypnotherapy and she said the same to me that I would need to commit to regular sessions and it may be a long time. I understand that no treatment for 'mental' health problems are quick fixes because usually the problems have been a long time coming on, so probably anything you do will take time and perseverance. I had very mixed feelings about my hypno experience, generally I didn't like it and I felt very vulnerable and exposed, but that may have got better had I stuck with it? Its very much down to the individual I suppose, so sorry not much help.

I presume you've been to Dr's from what you said? Did they not recommend a counsellor or psychotherapist? I hope things get better, You'll get there in the end.

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

I too have used a hypnotherapist. He did work providing I went weekly. When I started to drop to monthly, I found it only worked for the 1st, 10days after I had seen him.

Really need to go back but finance and a husband who thnks its a waste of money prevents me from doing so.

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

Hi,

I went for hypnotherapy a few years ago after failing 13 driving tests. I had developed a phobia and someone suggested Itried a hypnotherapist. I won't lie to you but it didn't "solve" my problems (went on to fail another 4 tests before passing on my 18th attempt).

The hypnotherapy did help me to find some relaxation techniques and although I still "failed" the tests the experiences were no where near as terrifying. After passing my test I had a few "wobbles" and reverted to the old tecniques and I definatly think they made a difference.

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

I tried hypnotherapy and had 12 sessions (1 a week) but didn't find that it helped me at all, mine was to help cope with a phobia so quite a difficult problem. It was very relaxing and an emotional experience but looking back i spent alot of money that would have been better spent elsewhere.

I think it depends on the person and problem to whether it will help you, i was really positive and excited about it but very dissapointed when i didn't have any improvement. I had to stop going as i just could not afford to carry on expecially not seeing any improvement.

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

Obviously, I wont be as much help as Sal, but I went through a long period of depression for many years after my brother died.

I never went to hypnotherapy or anything like it - but I wish now that I had. However, I have found from experience that having relaxing music playing in the background at home was a way I almost felt calm, its hard to explain, but there are some beautiful cd's out there of relaxation - wind, water, etc all very calming.

As I say, not really very helpful, but could be something extra to think about along with your hypnotherapy.

Re: Hypnotherapy....what do you think...please help?

Yes I am a hypnotherapist , since 1994

hypnotherapy can be very effective for all sorts of presentations as can NLP and the two can be used in combination or as stand alones. The most important thing is to find a therapist you are comfortable with (good rapport) and a therapy that is effective for you. Dont be afraid to ask questions, and dont be afraid to tell your therapist if there is something you are not happy with or you dont think things are working out.

I personally wouldnt suggest to a client that theirs might be a long job - people process at different rates and whilst it is true that some people may take a long time to unravel a tangle it is equally true that clients with what might seem intractable problems have been known to make sense and reach a resolution incredibly quickly. If your expectation is that it will take a long time - then a long time it will take.

Feel free to PM me if you think it will be helpful.
