That was my concern. I cannot believe that the practice just put the pregnant dog to sleep. That really shocked me and I am quite shocked that, until you, nobody on this thread seemed to be reacting to the fact that this healthy animal(s) were just euthanized. I am not sure what the solution was with the staffie and I am sure that there was probably a lot more to this story behind the scenes but it did make me think very carefully about whether the vet practice in question is one that I would want to work at.

TBH i wouldn't totally believe what the article says...there is prob a hell of a lot more to it, cos i can't imagine a vet would do this really. You only get one side of the story, so you never know what really happened!

I'm just going to put another twist on the situation. I think I would really struggle with the idea of putting this dog to sleep BUT what happens to her and the pups? More staffys to add to the hundreds already in rescue homes?

I cannot speak for Lovecat obviously - but what I took from her comment was that the comments seemed to be in support of the vets - not normal practice!! Normally the public are way too quick to slate our profession.

[/quote]Exactly! I totally agree with the comments and do not think these people should have bred their dog if they could not afford the outcome. I just found it a refreshing change as people usually take the oportunity to vet-bash for some reason.

we had a case like this, but with a cat back in october. the cat was given a c-section after the clients had said they could afford the treatment. they then came to collect the cat and kittens but claimed they had no money so the cat was kept for a week for them to pay. in the mean time, mum rejected her kittens and so they had to be hand reared by myself and other members of staff. Unsurprisingly, the owners left false phone numbers and never came to pick up mum and her kittens. we had to wait at least 3 weeks before any rehoming could be considered as legally they had not been signed over to us and therefore legal advice had to be sought. owners who can do this make me so angry and deserve never to be allowed an animal again!!! But we would never have put the cat or her kits to sleep!!!!!

Cheers Vicky Maybe I'm not so naive after all!!

After I spoke about my concerns regarding problems with the ears in later life because of this, she informed me that the 'breeder' is returning to her home on friday to remove the 'glue' ouch!

It makes me cross - a whelping is never an 'emergency' financially, the owners have mated the dog, and if the bitch has been caught, they've had 9 weeks to prepare for the 'emergency'! Also worked for the largest UK veterinary charity who unfortunately are held to ransom by breeders who can work the system, grrrr.

will agree with you - worked in a charity hospital for nearly 11 yrs - the charity clients can be some of the worse. Imagine A+E on a really busy Friday night and all the abuse and bad behaviour you will see there you see on a daily basis in charity clinics (not tarring everybody with the same brush though because equally you can get some really nice sincere clients but sadly these were the minority group)

Dodgy breeders are one of my pet hates!!! They don't a clue what they are doing, right up until their bitch/queen is in labour and this is when they call you for the first time for advice!!!! They live on a different planet, (or I wish they did!)
