My elderly mum is in hospital with a chest infection, and I went to visit her today. I was surprised to find a poly bag on her bed with tablets in. These were POMs which she had been prescribed while in hospital , but had just been handed to her

Re: Human drug labeling laws?

Glad to hear she's home now

She came home yesterday (hooray!), and is getting lots of TLC and rest!

Went round to see her yesterday, and they have let her bring the meds home... still without a label!

Have been speaking to a HCA friend who thinks we should put in a complaint

Re: Human drug labeling laws?

I agree with Paula, have a word and get it sorted. It seems very wrong and risky to me. Hope your mum is better soon x

Re: Human drug labeling laws?

Phrin,

I am sorry to hear your mum is unwell and in hospital.

I would strongly urge and advise you to organise a meeting or a chat at the very least, with the consultant in charge of her case. Better to get it out in the open, at least that way, they can do something about it, rather than run the risk of your mum taking the wrong meds or too many at one time.

Thinking of you

Re: Human drug labeling laws?

Yeah no I agree. If she wasn't expected to take drugs herself then I could maybe understand not having labels (although I still don't know why you wouldn't!) but there does seem a big risk with her taking her own meds. I would say something to one of the nurses if I was you. Better to be safe than sorry.

Hope your mum gets better soon!

Re: Human drug labeling laws?

The nurse comes round and tells her when to take the unlabelled drugs, but they were all mixed in together with her 'normal' meds that she was on already, which the nurses expect her to take at the correct time.

It just doesn't seem quite right - Ma is ill, and sleeping a lot - she might sleep through the time she needs to take her angina meds for example(one of her previous meds), or, being ill and woozy, might grab the wrong box and take 6 of the uber strong antibiotics the hospital has prescribed her! (Instead of the 6 x 5mg carbimazole she is on for hyperT4- also one of her previous meds)

Just seems there is a lot of room for error...
