She was 7, had spondylitis/arthritis. She lost all the muscle mass from her hind legs & around her rump, would occasionally fall over, she got urine scalded & sticky bum quite often. We had her on metacam for a while, but I hadn't been in practice that long by then, or learnt as much about rabbit medicine as I know now, so I still kick myself for not having done more for her...

At the time one of the vets I was working with, was qualified in accupuncture, so she used to have weekly sessions that helped a bit, but she never completely regained proper use of her hind legs, she couldn't hop anymore, she would place each foot seperately.

She was still eating & drinking normally & to look at her face on you wouldn't think there was anything wrong with her, until you looked round & saw her back & legs.
She'd survived uterine adenocarcinoma 18 months previously too & was so bright, it was such a heartbreaking decision, but I eventually decided that maybe I was just keeping her going for me....

She was the first pet I'd ever had put to sleep & to be honest thinking about it was the worst part, once it had happened, yes, I was devastated, but it did feel like a weight had been lifted from me, as I'd been so worried about her for so long.

Sorry for rambling on, I just thought I'd share my story as it was so similar.

Here she is looking particularly grumpy at having her photo taken!

However by writing this post, it says to me that you are nearing the time when maybe pts is the option you should be considering soon.

I know with my animals I've always done it before they've got to the stage where they are in a state I wouldn't want to remember them in. Does that make sense? For example I've got a dog who is nearly 14 years old and is happy and (touch wood) healthy. However if she became ill and was in a state that would upset me then I wouldn't hesitate to put her to sleep as I wouldn't want to remember her that way.

At the end of the day it is completely up to you and you will know when the time is right and when that time does come you can comfort yourself with the fact that he had a good long and happy life.
